Moving to the EU, how do I move my share portfolio?30 May 2025 18:06
Later this year I’m moving to Greece. I guess you could say I'm retiring (I’m 55). I’ll be a Greek resident and will no longer be able to hold a UK trading account.
I’m currently with IG. They told me I just need to sell everything, cash out, close the account before I emigrate.
I’d prefer not to have to sell everything, move the cash to Greece, open a trading account in Greece etc etc. I can only imagine the paperwork!
Is it possible to open a trading account with a provider who has presence in the UK and the EU, then transfer the entire portfolio within that company to a newly opened EU account with that same company? Does that even exist? Is it thing? If it is, who?
Or am I simply in a position of having to do what IG suggest?
All my holdings are FTSE100 currently split between trading account and an ISA. I know the ISA will go as soon as I move so it will effectively be in one account.
Open to advice from those that have moved tax residency.
