May 4 (Reuters) - British wholesale gas prices rose to their
highest levels since January on Tuesday morning, driven by lower
send-out of liquefied natural gas (LNG), firm demand and high
carbon prices.
* The within-day contract was up 2.25 pence at
66.75
p/therm by 0839 GMT.
* The day-ahead was up by 2.50 pence to 66
p/therm.
* Both contracts briefly hit 70 p/therm - their highest
levels
since mid-January.
* The UK system was almost 27 million cubic metres (mcm)
under-supplied on Tuesday morning, with above-normal demand of
218 mcm and supplies of 191 mcm, National Grid data showed.
* Total sendout of LNG was nominated at 29 mcm/day, down
from 87
mcm/day on Friday, analysts at Refinitiv said.
* Gas-for-power demand in the UK is forecast 14 mcm/d higher
for
Wednesday to make up for a drop in wind power generation, they
added.
* Peak wind generation is forecast at 13.8 gigawatts (GW) on
Tuesday and 8.8 GW the next day, out of total metered capacity
of around 19.5 GW, Elexon data showed.
* Russia also did not buy further capacity its border with
Ukraine
in an auction for July-September, Refinitiv's analysts said.
* Gazprom's decision to forego additional capacity for May
at a
time the market is looking for volumes to replenish Europe's
depleted gas storages lifted prices last week.
* The ongoing cold weather delaying injections into storage
and
high carbon prices also supported prices, a trader said.
* Temperatures in Britain will remain below normal until the
weekend, Refinitiv data showed.
* The Dutch TTF gas price for June was 0.37
euro
higher at 24.25 euros per megawatt hour, also a 4.5-month high.
* The benchmark Dec-21 EU carbon contract hit an
new
all-time high of 50.05 euros a tonne earlier on Tuesday and was
last up 0.16 euro at 49.58 euros a tonne.
