UK GAS-Prices rise on lower wind output, temperatures

Wed, 05th May 2021 09:27

LONDON, May 5 (Reuters) - British wholesale gas prices were
mostly higher on Wednesday morning as wind output is expected to
decrease and temperatures dip.

* The within-day contract was up 1.00 pence at
66.00
p/therm by 0824 GMT.

* The day-ahead was up 0.60 pence at 66.00
p/therm.

* Temperatures in Britain and north-west Europe are forecast
to
dip tomorrow before rising towards the weekend, Refinitiv Eikon
data showed.

* Gas-for-power demand has been curbed by stormy conditions
the
past couple of days but wind speeds should be lower from
tomorrow.

* Peak wind generation is forecast at 9.4 gigawatts (GW) on
Wednesday and 5 GW on Thursday, out of total metered capacity of
18 GW, Elexon data showed.

* Lower wind output typically increases gas demand from
power
plants.

* On the supply side, flows from Norway are down due to an
outage
at the Asgard field, resulting in lower flows to continental
Europe.

* However, supply through the Vesterled pipeline to Britain
is at
28 million cubic metres (mcm), up from 21 mcm yesterday, and
flows through Langeled are at capacity.

* Liquefied natural gas send-out is nominated at 34 mcm,
down from
42 mcm yesterday.

* The system was almost balanced with supply forecast at 239
mcm
and demand at 238 mcm, National Grid data showed.

* The Dutch TTF gas price for June was up by
0.37
euro at 23.42 euros per megawatt hour.

* The benchmark Dec-21 EU carbon contract was 0.14
euro
higher at 48.75 euros a tonne.
