UK GAS-Prices rise as cold weather, lower wind output drives demand

Mon, 25th Jan 2021 08:46

LONDON, Jan 25 (Reuters) - British wholesale gas prices rose
on Monday morning as below average temperatures and lower wind
output stoked demand.

* The within-day contract was 2.00 pence higher
at
62.00 pence per therm by 0841 GMT.

* The day-ahead contract was up 1.50 pence at
62.25
p/therm.

* Temperatures are forecast to stay below the seasonal norm
tomorrow, which should lift heating demand, before recovering
towards the end of the week.

* Wind power output is also forecast below the seasonal norm
for
the next two days which should drive higher demand for gas from
power plants.

* Peak wind generation is forecast at 7.8 gigawatts (GW) on
Monday
and 6.6 GW on Tuesday, out of total metered capacity of around
18 GW, Elexon data showed.

* On the supply side, Refinitiv gas analysts said a series
of
unplanned outages in Norway impacted flows at the weekend but
the impact is much lower today.

* Total liquefied natural gas send-out to the UK is
nominated at
43 mcm/d, 5 mcm higher than Friday.

* The system was over-supplied by around 5 million cubic
metres
(mcm), with demand forecast at 268 mcm and flows at 273 mcm/day,
National Grid data showed.

* The April contract was up 0.62 pence at 49.00
p/therm.

* The February price at the Dutch TTF hub was
0.15
euro higher at 21.80 euros per megawatt hour.

* The benchmark Dec-21 EU carbon contract was 0.05
euro
higher at 34.29 euros a tonne.
