UK GAS-Prices rise ahead of gas capacity auction, higher carbon

Mon, 16th Aug 2021 08:41

LONDON, Aug 16 (Reuters) - British wholesale gas prices rose
on Monday morning amid uncertainty around Russian imports,
higher carbon prices and expectations of lower wind output.

* Gas for immediate delivery rose by 3.20 pence
to
1.10 pounds per therm by 0735 GMT.

* The September contract was 3.00 pence higher
at
1.15 pounds/therm.

* "Uncertainty around lower Russian imports to north-west
Europe
via Mallnow and Nord Stream still creates considerable supply
risk impacting all the European hubs, following the fire at Novy
Urengoy condensate preparation plant," said Katarzyna
Piaskowska, gas analyst at Refinitiv.

* Mallnow flows remain reduced with live flows at 213
gigawatt
hours/day.

* However, the UK gas system was around 27 million cubic
metres
(mcm) over-supplied, as flows through the Langeled pipeline from
Norway increased.

* UK wind power generation is expected to fall over the next
few
days, which could increase demand for gas from power plants.

* A monthly capacity auction via Ukraine today will be
closely
watched by the market, with 15 million cubic metres (mcm) of
capacity offered at entry Sudzha and 73 mcm at the exit Velke
Kapusany.

* In previous auctions, Gazprom booked all the offered
volumes via
Sudzha and about 14.8 mcm via Velke Kapusany and Refinitiv gas
analysts expect today's auction to be similar.

* The month-ahead gas price at the Dutch TTF
hub was
1.60 euros higher at 46.25 euros per megawatt hour.

* The benchmark Dec-21 EU carbon contract was 1.13
euro
higher at 56.51 euros a tonne.

* The benchmark Dec-21 British carbon contract was
slow
to trade.
