LONDON, July 16 (Reuters) - British utility SSE said
on Thursday that energy market regulator Ofgem has approved its
proposal to build a power link to connect the Shetland Isles in
Scotland to the British mainland.
The 600 megawatt link, proposed by SSE’s transmission
business Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks
Transmission, will enable the connection of renewable energy on
Shetland, including SSE Renewables' Viking wind farm which
reached a final investment decision last month.
The transmission line will connect Shetland to the British
mainland for the first time.
Approval is conditional upon Ofgem being satisfied, by the
end of this year, that the Viking wind farm will go ahead.
Last year, Ofgem said it was unable to approve the power
link project as it wanted more certainty that the wind farm
would be built.
