FTSE 100 movers: Morrison leads on bid speculation

Fri, 16th May 2014 15:15

Morrison was today leading the upside, driven by market chatter around a potential bid for the group by a US-led private equity consortium. According to the Daily Mail's market report, such a bid could total around 6.4bn pounds in cash. Sector peers Tesco and Sainsbury were also lifted by the news. Reckitt Benckiser and British American Tobacco also proved popular after investors sought stocks typically considered slightly less risky. Meanwhile, Coca-Cola HBC slumped after it reported a drop in first quarter revenue and volumes due to the timing of Easter and foreign exchange movements. The second largest bottler of the brands of The Coca-Cola Company said volumes declined by 4% to 409.6m cases in the three months to March 28th and new sales revenue fell 7% to £1.3bn. Credit Suisse issued a 'neutral' rating for the group, saying the year was "off to a slow start". TUI Travel shares were pushed lower by the warning from the Foreign Office about Kenya, from where British tourists are being evacuated. The organisation issued a statement which read: "There is a high threat from terrorism, including kidnapping. The main threat comes from extremists linked to al-Shabaab, a militant group that has carried out attacks in Kenya in response to Kenya's military intervention in Somalia." The group, which owns Thomson and First Choice, made the decision to repatriate all of its customers and had cancelled all flights until at least October. Intertek failed to impress with a 0.3% rise in quarterly organic revenue as operating margins improved on ongoing restructuring activities, saying growth was limited by weaker-than-expected activity in the energy market in the three months to the end of April 2014.FTSE 100 - RisersMorrison (Wm) Supermarkets (MRW) 212.00p +3.31%Tesco (TSCO) 310.75p +2.71%Reckitt Benckiser Group (RB.) 5,075.00p +2.32%Sainsbury (J) (SBRY) 340.50p +2.31%Standard Chartered (STAN) 1,333.50p +1.95%AstraZeneca (AZN) 4,815.00p +1.87%Diageo (DGE) 1,940.00p +1.60%Associated British Foods (ABF) 2,989.00p +1.49%BT Group (BT.A) 367.40p +1.27%British American Tobacco (BATS) 3,509.00p +1.23%FTSE 100 - FallersCoca-Cola HBC AG (CDI) (CCH) 1,390.00p -3.94%TUI Travel (TT.) 407.40p -3.87%Schroders (SDR) 2,498.00p -3.81%Weir Group (WEIR) 2,510.00p -3.39%Barratt Developments (BDEV) 345.70p -3.38%Anglo American (AAL) 1,554.00p -3.36%Intertek Group (ITRK) 2,988.00p -3.30%easyJet (EZJ) 1,501.00p -3.16%St James's Place (STJ) 725.00p -3.14%IMI (IMI) 1,538.00p -3.09%NR
