Wed, 20th Jul 2011 14:05

The banks were leading the Footsie higher on Wednesday afternoon, with Barclays, RBS and Lloyds recouping some of the week's earlier losses. Barclays was the highest riser, gaining 4.54%, but still remains around 3% down over the last seven days. ARM Holdings was in demand with the chip company boosted by strong results from the US gadget maker Apple, which uses ARM technology in the iPhone.Drugs giant AstraZeneca fell after it (along with US peer Bristol-Myers Squibb) received a blow when the US Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) Advisory Committee rejected their jointly-developed diabetes drug, dapagliflozin, though the vote was a close one. Oil and gas engineer AMEC and oil giant BP were firmer as oil prices head higher. Brent Crude futures were 1.22% higher at $118.49 as at 14:16, while WTI Crude prices rose 1.2% to $98.67.Miners Randgold Resources and Fresnillo were among the worst performers, tracking copper, gold and silver futures downwards. Notably, silver futures fell 3.79% to $38.70.Heading the other way was sector peer BHP Billiton after the miner revealed that it was able to achieve another iron ore output record in the year ended 30 June, its eleventh consecutive annual production record. Citi reiterated its buy rating and 3,000p target price, citing a "solid" fourth quarter.BCFTSE 100 - RisersBarclays (BARC) 221.20p +4.54%ITV (ITV) 67.35p +4.02%Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS) 34.36p +3.84%Lloyds Banking Group (LLOY) 44.77p +3.79%ARM Holdings (ARM) 603.50p +3.61%BP (BP.) 473.30p +2.76%Amec (AMEC) 1,128.00p +2.73%Wolseley (WOS) 1,878.00p +2.57%International Consolidated Airlines Group SA (IAG) 232.60p +2.51%RSA Insurance Group (RSA) 134.80p +2.35%FTSE 100 - FallersICAP (IAP) 461.90p -2.10%Sainsbury (J) (SBRY) 311.60p -1.39%Glencore International (GLEN) 482.15p -1.26%Imperial Tobacco Group (IMT) 2,115.00p -1.17%Randgold Resources Ltd.
