FTSE 100 movers: Banks lower after Deutsche Bank profit warning

Mon, 20th Jan 2014 15:30

Fears that poor results from Deutsche Bank could mean poor updates from banks across Europe weighed on the sector continent-wide on Monday, Barclays included. The German lender revealed a fourth quarter pre-tax loss of €1.15bn, which Ishaq Siddiqi, a Market Strategist at ETX Capital, described as a "nasty set of numbers which have geared investors here in Europe for what could be an ugly earnings season for European banks". RBS was also hit after analysts at JPMorgan Cazenove downgraded the stock to 'underweight', while HSBC was making headlines after its regional subsidiary, Bank Middle East, agreed to sell its banking business in Jordan to Arab Jordan Investment Bank.JPMorgan Cazenove pointed out that UK banks face an uncertain regulatory environment and that their capital requirements will be unclear until the end of 2014.Meanwhile, Fresnillo and Randgold both made strong gains as they tracked precious metals' prices higher. Shares in Hargreaves Lansdown benefited from an upgrade from Credit Suisse, which moved its rating on the stock to "neutral" and significantly upped its target price from 790p to 1,470p. On Wednesday the group declined sharply after it said that new rules under the Retail Distribution Review would trim revenues by around £9m and would reduce client charges by £8m in the first 12 months and revealed it will need to gather approximately £3.5bn of new assets over the next three years to offset the impact of these declines. Credit Suisse was also helping to lift shares in Next higher, albeit from a note issued on Friday, in which it upped its target price on the stock from 5,500p to 6,500p.
