Cummins and Iberdrola to roll out 'green hydrogen' power in Spain

(Sharecast News) - America's Cummins has selected Spain for the site of one of the world's biggest green-hydrogen electrolyser manufacturing plants.
The announcement follows the decision by the American firm to partner with international power group Iberdrola to build large-scale hydrogen production sites in Spain and Portugal.

Cummins will thus establish itself as the leading supplier of electrolyser systems on the Iberian peninsula and the Spanish outfit as the leading developer of such project and as the final supplier to industrial customers.

"This initiative will accelerate the production of green hydrogen in Spain and will create a new industry, the manufacturing of electrolyser systems, with high growth potential," said Iberdrola boss, Ignacio Galan.

"We continue to make progress in our ambitious plan to put Spain and Europe at the global forefront of this technology by reducing energy dependence and fossil fuel consumption while driving the country's economic and social revitalization."

The site of the new plant is Guadalajara, in Spain's southeastern Castilla-La Mancha region.

It will have a production capacity of approximately 500 MW/year, scalable to over 1GW per year, and is due to open in 2023.

In total, Iberdrola has submitted 53 hydrogen-related projects under the EU's Next Generation programme which could activate investments worth €2.5bn for annual production of 60,000 tonnes annually.

Green hydrogen production of 4GW by 20303 envisaged under that plan would amount to 20% of Spain's overall target.
