BA considers quitting Heathrow terminal 3 - report

Fri, 29th May 2020 10:50

(Sharecast News) - British Airways is considering closing its operation at Heathrow airport's terminal 3 and shrinking its activity at terminal 5, according to a report.
BA operates short-haul European flights from terminal 3 and also flies to long-haul destinations including Cape Town and Miami from the hub, which has been closed during lockdown. The terminal carried about 15% of BA's Heathrow traffic before the Covid-19 shutdown.

The airline, part of IAG, is looking at quitting terminal 3 and scaling back at terminal 5, the Guardian reported.

The paper also said BA was proposing to outsource the work of at least 450 employees it is making jobless as part of its 12,000 job reductions. Jobs that may be cut and then outsourced include ticketing, lost baggage returns and controlling the weight in the plane.

The outsourcing plans could put BA in a political storm after the company accepted support worth hundreds of millions of plans from the UK government including a loan of £300m from the Bank of England and wage subsidies for 30,000 furloughed workers worth £35m in April.

Jim McMahon, Labour's shadow transport secretary, told the Guardian: "The government should have done more to protect these jobs. We cannot see roles which are currently paid through the job retention scheme outsourced."

BA told the paper it was trying to save as many jobs as possible and was consulting openly with unions and employees.
