London close: Footsie hits one-month high

Wed, 23rd Dec 2009 16:23

The UK's leading index lost a chunk of its gains late on as weak housing data hurt Wall Street, although London still registered its best close in over a month.Despite predictably quiet trade, the FTSE 100 ended ahead for the third session in a row and as high as it's been since 16 November. It was the miners that stood out. Stronger metal prices meant Randgold Resources, ENRC, BHP Billiton, Kazakhmys, Lonmin, Vedanta and Xstrata were among the top ten blue chip risers. They were joined by Rio Tinto, which accepted a $2.025bn offer for its Alcan Packaging pharmaceutical, tobacco and food divisions from packaging group Amcor as it continues its programme of asset sales to ease its debt pile. Also in mining, Minera Penmont, the joint venture 56% owned by silver miner Fresnillo, has made a bid to snatch Canadian mining company Canplats Resources from bullion producer Goldcorp.Minera is offering C$4.20 in cash plus one share, with a notional value of C$0.20, in a new exploration company for every Canplats share. The offer terms trump those offer by Goldcorp, the world's second largest bullion producer. Goldcorp launched an offer in November worth C$238m. News that British Gas owner Centrica has agreed to sell a 50% equity stake in its 270 megawatt Lincs offshore wind farm for £50m in cash went down well. But Cairn Energy caused gains to narrow. The oil group gave back some of the big gains made earlier this week after it said it would start drilling operations in Greenland a week ahead of expectations. Also on the slide were defensive stocks such as utilities United Utilities, Severn Trent and International Power.Elsewhere, AstraZeneca has done a deal to buy French private infection research company Novexel for as much as $505m (£316m). The Anglo-Swedish drug giant will pay an initial $350m (£219m) in cash plus an extra $75m (£47m) if certain milestones are achieved. Another $80m (£50m), equivalent to the French group's cash, is due on completion.Tullow Oil has firmed its view on the potential of the West Cape Three Points block, offshore Ghana, after it latest test drill. The Mahogany Deep-2 well, drilled 3 km from Mahogany-3, was the furthest down-dip Jubilee well in the West Cape Three Points licence, Tullow said.Premier Oil has plugged and abandoned the Cá R?ng Vang well on Block 07/03, offshore Vietnam. The oil firm had better luck in Pakistan, where the Kadanwari-19 well, operated by Italian oil giant ENI, encountered 12m of high quality net gas pay in a Lower Guru Sandstone reservoir.Support services contracting firm Balfour Beatty has won a facilities management contract from defence technology outfit QinetiQ. The seven year contract has a base-line value of £15m per annum, and will be supplemented with additional fees for non-core services.A bid battle could still be on the cards for care home group Supporta after its main shareholder suggested it should consider a possible cash offer from a third party rather than an agreed all-share deal with Mears. One takeover that does look done and dusted is the takeover of live music group MAMA by CD and DVD retailer HMV. The two companies have agreed on an acquisition worth £46m or 5.4p a share. Finance consultancy SMS Finance recently made a 4.75p a share offer for MAMA.Africa-focused diamond producer Pangea DiamondFields has completed an upgrade of processing facilities at its Cassanguidi project in Angola but lowered its production targets. It now expects to produce 6,000 carats a month in the first quarter of 2010, compared with a previous estimate of 8,000 tonnes.Shares in digital terrestrial television technology company Motive Television slumped after the company said the sale of its remaining production assets is taking longer than expected, and now won't be completed until the new year.FTSE 100 - RisersEurasian Natural Resources (ENRC) 901.00p +3.80%Randgold Resources (RRS) 5,115.00p +3.73%British American Tobacco (BATS) 2,027.50p +3.08%Xstrata (XTA) 1,071.50p +2.83%Vedanta Resources (VED) 2,517.00p +2.69%Alliance Trust (ATST) 323.90p +2.63%Rio Tinto (RIO) 3,296.00p +2.49%Lonmin (LMI) 1,885.00p +2.45%BHP Billiton (BLT) 1,945.00p +2.10%Kazakhmys (KAZ) 1,272.00p +2.09%FTSE 100 - FallersCairn Energy (CNE) 324.60p -4.25%BT Group (BT.A) 137.50p -3.03%Royal Bank of Scotland Group (RBS) 28.41p -1.80%United Utilities Group (UU.) 494.50p -1.59%Liberty International (LII) 489.40p -1.25%International Power (IPR) 303.80p -1.24%TUI Travel (TT.) 250.00p -1.22%Aviva (AV.) 385.00p -1.16%Carnival (CCL) 2,141.00p -0.97%Tullow Oil (TLW) 1,269.00p -0.86%FTSE 250 - RisersGem Diamonds (GEMD) 221.80p +5.17%Filtrona PLC (FLTR) 187.60p +4.51%Moneysupermarket.com (MONY) 76.55p +4.43%PayPoint (PAY) 439.30p +4.42%Murray International Trust (MYI) 767.00p +4.42%RIT Capital Partners (RCP) 1,016.00p +4.42%Daejan Holdings (DJAN) 2,710.00p +4.15%Merchants Trust (MRCH) 334.70p +3.98%Taylor Wimpey (TW.) 37.12p +3.98%JPMorgan Indian Inv Trust (JII) 378.00p +3.87%FTSE 250 - FallersGreene King (GNK) 402.90p -3.31%Provident Financial (PFG) 938.50p -2.39%Laird (LRD) 126.00p -2.02%Synergy Healthcare (SYR) 664.50p -1.85%Dunelm Group (DNLM) 400.10p -1.84%Babcock International Group (BAB) 585.50p -1.76%PV Crystalox Solar (PVCS) 59.50p -1.65%Amlin (AML) 358.60p -1.59%Bodycote (BOY) 157.50p -1.56%VT Group (VTG) 517.50p -1.43%
