Just Eat faces backlash after delivering food with undisclosed allergens

Mon, 14th Jan 2019 11:25

(Sharecast News) - Just Eat has come under fire after a number of restaurants using its online delivery marketplace was found to be breaching regulations that require them to warn of possible allergens contained in their dishes. An investigation from the BBC's Panorama found found many restaurants did not warn of the ingredients in their dishes, such as nuts or shellfish, that could cause severe allergic reactions and found discrepancies between what they were serving and what they told customers. All food businesses are legally required to provide customers with information on 14 major allergens that could prove fatal. But FTSE 250-listed Just Eat does not require its restaurants to give that information, so customers have to contact the restaurant to find out whether a meal is suitable to eat.The BBC found that over 100 restaurants have food hygiene ratings of zero, the lowest on the scale.Just Eat has launched an internal investigation and said it would discover if restaurants were not providing accurate information: "This should not have happened."In response to information that one restaurant had provided misleading information, the company said: "As soon as we were notified we took immediate steps to rectify this and can confirm that this restaurant no longer has Local Legend status. We are investigating how this has happened to stop this from happening again.""We have already offered further support and training," it added.Just Eat shares were little moved on Monday.
