LONDON (Alliance News) - Imagination Technologies Group PLC said Thursday it has signed a board collaboration deal with Oracle Corp, intended to enhance Java for embedded and Internet of Things applications and optimize Java for the MIPS CPU architecture.
The companies are working together to bring the Oracle Java Development Kit, Oracle Java SE Embedded, and other product support to MIPS32 and MIPS64 systems, said Imagination.
The collaboration will include Java support for 32-bit and 64-bit MIPS architectures spanning embedded to networking, gateways to wireless access points, said the companies.
Imagination also said that the companies will be working to improve Java on systems using the FTSE 250-listed firm's PowerVR graphics.
In a separate announcement Imagination said Thursday it has formed an open source foundation, 'prpl,' with a number of technology companies to support datacentre-to-device portability.
The partnership with companies including Broadcom, Cavium, Ikanos, Ineda Systems, Ingenic Semiconductor, Lantiq, Nevales Networks, PMC, Qualcomm Incorporated, will create prpl, an open-source, community-driven, collaborative, non-profit foundation targeting and supporting the MIPS architecture-and open to others-with a focus on enabling next-generation 'datacenter to device' portable software and virtualized architectures.
The company said prpl will enable developers to draw on considerable resources to deliver applications and devices that share open-source innovations created by member companies to both B2C and B2B markets.
"Imagination is extremely committed to growing the MIPS ecosystem, and we're demonstrating that with new initiatives such as the creation of the prpl open source foundation, and this exciting new relationship with Oracle," said Krishna Yarlagadda, President of Imagination, North America.
Shares in Imagination Technologies Group jumped at the market open Thursday, trading up 6.45% at 222.8 pence per share, the biggest gainer on the FTSE 250.
