LONDON (Alliance News) - fastjet PLC Tuesday said it carried a record number of passengers in August, which it said was partly a result of the new routes to Malawi which it introduced in July and due to increased frequency on some existing routes.
The African low-cost airline said it carried 76,741 passengers in August, a 17.2% increase on the 65,496 passengers it carried in the same month in 2014.
However, its load factor declined by three percentage points to 75% from 79%.
"We are delighted to report record monthly passenger numbers for the second consecutive month, further affirming the growing appetite for low-cost aviation across southern and eastern Africa. August is traditionally a strong month but with a capacity increase of 23% versus August 2014, we are delighted to maintain such strong demand," Chief Executive Ed Winter said in a statement.
For July, fastjet had said it carried 71,763 passengers, up 36% on the 52,792 passengers it carried in July 2014. Its load factor decreased by one percentage point in July to 72% from 73%.
Shares in fastjet were trading down 0.4% at 99.15p Tuesday morning.
