The current death rate from the virus is 5%, based upon the 918,187 cases and 46,070 deaths worldwide to date. Obviously this may change as the pandemic has only just reached many countries and others are starting to get more organised. There are other factors apart from underlying health issues which will contribute to peoples chances of survival.
The death rate is much higher for Spain and Italy and the air quality in Northern Italy and Spain will have been a factor (see earlier post with links to air quality in Spain and Italy). Indonesia, which only had it's first case on the 1st March also has a high death rate and has had very poor air quality due to large scale burning of forests to replace them with oil palm plantations.
Poverty will also be a factor, hence Brazil with large numbers living in the favelas has a much higher death rate than Israel or Australia, countries with a similar number of cases.
Government's procedures will also have an effect, as in Sweden they have only just decided to close the ski slopes and the country has remained open for business, whereas the other Scandinavian countries have put extensive restrictions in place. Hence, the death rate for Sweden is much higher than the other Scandinavian countries.
Access to good Medical facilities and whether a country has a high number of older people, especially those with underlying medical problems will all contribute to peoples chances of survival.
It is too early to make conclusive statements based upon the statistics to date, but it does look like less contact means less chance of survival when looking at the Scandinavian figures. Stay in doors and stay safe and talk to friends and family on the phone or via the internet.
Italy 110,574 cases; 13,155 deaths; death rate 11.9%; first case Jan 29th.
Spain 102,136 cases; 9,053 deaths; death rate 8.9%; first case Jan 30th.
Indonesia 1677 cases; 157 deaths; death rate 9.4$; first case Mar 1st.
Brazil 5,923 cases; 206 deaths; 3.5% death rate; first case Feb 24th.
Australia 4,864 cases; 21 deaths; 0.4% death rate; first case Jan 24th.
Israel 5,591 cases; 25 deaths; death rate 0.4%; first case Feb 20th.
Sweden 4,447 cases; 239 deaths; death rate 5.4%; first case Jan 30th.
Norway 4,828 cases; 44 deaths; 0.9% death rate; first case Feb 25th.
Denmark 3,107 cases; 104 deaths; 3.3% death rate; first case Feb 21st.
Finland 1,446 cases; 17 deaths; death rate 1.2%; first case Jan 28th.

Comparisons with other respiratory viruses.
Every year an estimated 290,000 to 650,000 people die in the world due to complications from seasonal influenza (flu) viruses. This figure corresponds to 795 to 1,781 deaths per day due to the seasonal flu.
SARS (November 2002 to July 2003): was a coronavirus that originated from Beijing, China, spread to 29 countries, and resulted in 8,096 people infected with 774 deaths (fatality rate of 9.6%). Considering that SARS ended up infecting 5,237 people in mainland China, Wuhan Coronavirus surpassed SARS on January 29, 2020, when Chinese officials confirmed 5,974 cases of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV). One day later, on January 30, 2020 the novel coronavirus cases surpassed even the 8,096 cases worldwide which were the final SARS count in 2003.
MERS (in 2012) killed 858 people out of the 2,494 infected (fatality rate of 34.4%).

A taxi driver I know picked up two people off the flight link recently. They were surprised that they weren't tested or had their temperature taken at Heathrow. While they were in Pattaya, Thailand, they were tested three times just walking down the street. Now look at the latest figures for the UK and Thailand :-
Uk 38,168 cases and 3,605 deaths.
Thailand 1,978 cases and 19 deaths.

The last column which showed the date of the first infection in countries is no longer shown, but two new columns have been added. The total number of tests, which for the UK is 173,784 and the number of tests per million of population, which for the UK is 2,560.

Lefkosia, the package is indeed unprecedented and made by a AAA Tory Government.
Somewhat unfairly, those that have been cheating the system will still be able to access Universal Credit.
That strikes me as being more than fair, if you are not prepared to contribute to the PAYE scheme, then you are not entitled to benefit from the rewards that it offers. Nor will they contribute towards National Insurance credits towards their Old Age Pensions, unless of course they are double cheating the system by claiming Unemployment Benefits, in which case they should be rewarded with a fine or free Board and Lodging at Her Majesty's Pleasure.

Why are the Gwent valleys a hot spot in Wales?
IMHO there are two reasons why the Gwent valleys are a hot spot.
1) The weekend when the Wales v Scotland rugby was called off and all the football was called off, there were two concerts on the Saturday and Sunday in the Motorpoint Arena. Both were the Steriophonics who have a very large following in the Gwent Valleys.
https://www.walesonline.co.uk/whats-on/ ... 9-17924597
2) The Gwent valleys still has a lot of industrial sites and as people live in the valleys temperature inversions can result in polluted air being unable to escape. Wuhan, N.Italy and Spain all have poor air quality which may be a factor in these hot spots.
The extract below is copied from my post from viewtopic.php?f=2&t=213789 from Sat Mar 28, 2020 1:47 pm
Northern Italy has very high levels of air pollution from industrial sources, similar to Wuhan.
“For Italy, especially the northern part of Italy, the air pollution comes from emissions of the industry and transport. In the winter season, the weather conditions are very unfavorable due to temperature inversion that prevents the air pollution from dispersing in the higher layers of the atmosphere.
https://www.forbes.com/sites/emanuelaba ... 71c3358fde
Spain is also seeing a higher level of mortality with COVID-19, which could be explained by the higher levels of air pollution.
15 million Spaniards are breathing air the EU considers polluted

BCG jabs mean you are six times less likely to get coronavirus, study finds
New research suggests that countries with widespread tuberculosis vaccination programmes have much lower rates of the Covid-19 virus
By
Verity Bowman
8 April 2020
Coronavirus death rates are almost six times lower in countries with a widespread vaccination programme involving the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) jab, a new study has found.
The BCG vaccine gives immunity to tuberculosis, but mass vaccination was dropped in the UK in 2005 when rates of the lung infection dropped.
Yet US-based experts now think the vaccine could improve immune systems and protect people from infection.
New research, which is yet to be peer reviewed, suggests that countries with widespread BCG vaccination programmes have much lower rates of the coronavirus than nations without.
Looking at the mortality per one million residents of each country with sufficient data, the researchers made an estimate on the coronavirus fatality rate from the top 50 countries reporting highest case events.
Researchers factored in a nation's economic status as well as its elderly population, factors which could distort the overall picture of death rates.
The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health experts said in their paper: "The intriguing observation of a significant association between BCG use and lower Covid-19-attributable mortality remained discernable.
“While mortality attributable to Covid-19 has devastated global health systems and economies, striking regional differences have been observed.
“Covid-19-attributable mortality among BCG-using countries was 5.8 times lower than in non BCG-using countries.”
The paper was published on the online archive MedRxiv rather than an academic journal as it has not yet been peer-reviewed by other academics.
The research comes as others around the world launch trials investigating the possible benefits of BCG vaccination amid the coronavirus pandemic.
One team in Australia is trialing whether the vaccination will protect against Covid-19 or reduce severity or Covid-19 in healthcare workers.
The Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne fast-tracking human studies in order to find a quick solution to protect those on the frontline of the pandemic.
It is hoped that the vaccine will boost the immune systems of health workers, who are currently only protected by PPE.
Researchers from the institute said: “The Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccine is designed to protect against tuberculosis.
“However it also boosts immunity to protect against other infections.
“The purpose of the BRACE trial is to find out whether BCG vaccination protects against Covid-19 or reduces severity or Covid-19 in Australian healthcare workers.”
It is thought around 4,000 healthcare workers will participate in the six-month trial.

Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination and COVID-19
Scientific Brief
12 April 2020
Summary
There is no evidence that the Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccine (BCG) protects people against infection with COVID-19 virus. Two clinical trials addressing this question are underway, and WHO will evaluate the evidence when it is available. In the absence of evidence, WHO does not recommend BCG vaccination for the prevention of COVID-19. WHO continues to recommend neonatal BCG vaccination in countries or settings with a high incidence of tuberculosis.1
There is experimental evidence from both animal and human studies that the BCG vaccine has non-specific effects on the immune system. These effects have not been well characterized and their clinical relevance is unknown.2,3
On 11 April 2020, WHO updated its ongoing evidence review of the major scientific databases and clinical trial repositories, using English, French and Chinese search terms for COVID-19, coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2 and BCG.
The review yielded three preprints (manuscripts posted online before peer-review), in which the authors compared the incidence of COVID-19 cases in countries where the BCG vaccine is used with countries where it is not used and observed that countries that routinely used the vaccine in neonates had less reported cases of COVID-19 to date. Such ecological studies are prone to significant bias from many confounders, including differences in national demographics and disease burden, testing rates for COVID-19 virus infections, and the stage of the pandemic in each country.
The review also yielded two registered protocols for clinical trials, both of which aim to study the effects of BCG vaccination given to health care workers directly involved in the care of patients with COVID-19.4,5
BCG vaccination prevents severe forms of tuberculosis in children and diversion of local supplies may result in neonates not being vaccinated, resulting in an increase of disease and deaths from tuberculosis.6-8 In the absence of evidence, WHO does not recommend BCG vaccination for the prevention of COVID-19. WHO continues to recommend neonatal BCG vaccination in countries or settings with a high incidence of tuberculosis.

IMHO the WHO under Timid Ted's leadership doesn't have the bravado or the confidence to take the difficult decisions with the COVID-19 pandemic. While the research hasn't been peer-reviewed, even if the results are half right, that could amount to three times fewer cases. IMHO the sheer magnitude of the difference in the number of cases warrants the immediate use of the BCG for front line staff (I'm surprised it isn't already mandatory for health workers). Plus research has shown that the BCG offers some 'beneficial effects against non-related infections' and 'protection against non-related viral infections.' (see the two extracts from the link below).
'The tuberculosis vaccine bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) has heterologous beneficial effects against non-related infections.'
'In conclusion, BCG induces epigenetic reprogramming in human monocytes in vivo, followed by functional reprogramming and protection against non-related viral infections, with a key role for IL-1ß as a mediator of trained immunity responses.'

There are a lot of very poor countries around the world, where it would be expected that COVID-19 would have a much higher number of cases and deaths, but as yet this hasn't occured. The list of countries still vaccinating with the BCG compared with the list of countries COVID-19 statistics, seem to back up the theory of the BCG reducing the chance of the virus six-fold.

Coronavirus: Ecuador sees massive surge in deaths in April
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-latin-america-52324218
Why has Ecuador had a massive surge in deaths? IMHO it is because unlike other Latin American countries or economically less developed countries in other parts of the world, it is the only one to stop it's BCG vaccination program (see figure two in the link below). On the map in figure two it sticks out like a sore thumb as the only purple shaded area in South or Central America, Africa or Asia.

Why 2m social distancing even when masks are worn?
Now I have the answer, it's because satellite technology cannot separate people as it's only accurate up to 6 feet. Therefore, in a future surveillance world, governments will need people to get used to keeping in excess of six feet apart, ie. 2m = 6 feet 6 inches. The implications of the video at the bottom of this post are frightening!
Other anomalies with COVID-19.
European Mortality rates are showing that there are actually less people dying than in the previous three winters (https://www.euromomo.eu/index.html).
The WHO's handling of the situation has also given cause for concern. They didn't pass on the warning from Taiwan; they dismiss the use of Chloroquine (see BBC extract below); and the WHO states 'There is no evidence that the Bacille Calmette-Guérin vaccine (BCG) protects people against infection with COVID-19 virus.'
Chloroquine, and a related derivative, hydroxychloroquine, have gained attention - despite the World Health Organization (WHO) saying there is no definitive evidence they work.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/51980731
Firstly, the warning of a virus with HTH transmission by Taiwan has been proven, as that virus is now called COVID-19, and the email of the warning has been produced.
Taiwan shows e-mail to counter WHO accusations over early coronavirus infections
https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/3914404
Secondly, the same BBC article states that Chloroquine works in blocking COVID-19 in lab studies; that there are more than 20 clinical trials being carried out on the treatment of COVID-19 with Chloroquine; but that there are also risks of serious side effects from Chloroquine, including renal and liver damage.

https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/03/who-launches-global-megatrial-four-most-promising-coronavirus-treatments#
Finally, there is research showing that the BCG reduces the chance of contracting COVID-19 six-fold, which appears to be backed up by cross referencing the statistics of countries cases with their BCG vaccination stance. I can understand caution in the use of the BCG as it is a live virus type of vaccination, which could cause TB in people with a weakened immune system, but IMHO the WHO needs to be more open.
