I agree with Oli, the most likely scenario is 5 day letters and 7 day parcels and I can't see many job losses at all with that, just a restructuring of duties.
Which is unfortunate for me as I'd jump at the chance of VR, alternatively I'd settle for just working weekends, doing maybe 18 hours over a sat and sun delivering pkts.
postman24, I have been mulling over the practicality of a 5 day letter delivery (Monday to Friday) overlaid with a 7 day parcel service. I believe that this would actually provide more permanent delivery jobs as opposed to the possibility of 20,000 job losses. It would also increase opportunities and possibilities for work variation and overtime. The more senior staff might be happy with a weekday walk and the weekends off whilst the youngsters might prefer to mix and match with overtime potential. Just a thought?
I wonder if Royal Mail would cease letter delivery Saturday and instead have parcel only delivery .
And somehow still satisfy the criteria , still , of a six day week delivery . Pretty much all bases covered . If Ofcom agree that is
Crystal ball bloke. Where have you been for the last 6 months? Royal mail have been in talks with ofcom about it for a while now. Needs legislation though which I can see being given eventually. (for good or bad).
One of the strangest comments I've read on here for a good while,
Obviously don't know what your talking about, 5 day letter delivery will be the loss of around 20000 jobs
the other problem is, all those staff, that suddenly have saturday free.... instead of being tyold to go an work in another part of the business, will, under current attitudes want paying overtime for that, because they'll consider it not part of their job, personally i'd give them the day off and deduct that from their wages !
wasnt saturday letter delivery one of the core things that they prided themselves on / had to do ?
This share I've said before is a good long term bet, 4 or 5 years unfortunately for the staff the big profits will come when Saturday letter delivery ends, and the board knows it.
