MSC Leandra is now docked at Singapore. She is scheduled to depart to China on Monday. This could be sunday as she has arrived one day earlier than what was on the original schedule.
I’m guessing she won’t stay long. That place is ‘busy’!
Currently being bunkered from Hai Soon 16 tanker
For her journey north. . .
Willsweag...When would you expect the actual trial to start ? I think Vince had Q4 which seems miles off. I have Q2..
I had Q4 based on the state of play at the time. Which was the meandering journeys around South Africa etc.
If Leandra is due in dry Dock, its more likely to be back end of June, early July.
Leandra should leave dry dock at the end of April or there abouts, if MSC are serious about our fuel then fuel supply should be announced to coincide with her departure from dry dock which will put her on her new routing, all anticipation will put her on a NW Europe route taking in Rotterdam
It takes about 3 to 4 weeks to travel from China to Rotterdam so could start the trial late May early June.
Early May v earliest possible it would seem.
Realistically if MSC are serious as jackg124 says. Then May/June start. There are a few loops that might take in Rotterdam and last update did suggest that the route was not yet decided
Good luck all serious holders here
Fingers crossed we are at the start of the end of our journey!
Vessel availability would be the only foreseeable hindrance but with capacity slowing this should be easily overcome.
There was a mention when we first signed with MSC that 2 engineers that previously worked with Maersk on the POC and LONO trials would join the trial Vessel/s, not had any mention further on this since so may get something in the update.
'Vessel availability would be the only foreseeable hindrance but with capacity slowing this should be easily overcome.'
What vessel availability are you referring to ?
From the framework agreement
The proof-of-concept tests for each of bioMSAR™ and MSAR® will be conducted on a vessel now owned by MSC that was previously used for prior successful MSAR® demonstrations on a 69MW 2-stroke engine and commence by no later than 31 December 2022, subject to the ongoing availability of the vessel
This is the MSC Leandra which should be ready to start the trial in May.
I'm with you 100% that the trial should start in May, perhaps ongoing availability of the vessel can be brought up at the upcoming IMC for clarification, hoping the results aren't too vague and give clarity on where we are.
I was under the assumption that as soon as the dry docking was complete the trials would start once the ship got to it's starting point of the route eg Rotterdam. As you say hopefully the results clarify this.
We still don’t know who the fuel supplier is going to be… and what about MMU installation lead-times etc? May sounds very aggressive but would love to be wrong
The arrangement for trials does not necessarily need to be the same for commercial. Could be a more ad-hoc temporary arrangement at a refuelling terminal for PoC and LONO, and then transition to a full refinery installation later.
Reading the latest business update suggests (but by no means is clear) that there is some need to agree the post-LONO commercial arrangements before the parties will get involved in the trials.
Dust - see my earlier post below which states similar:
“The POC tests will commence in H1 CY23 after the Leandra returns from its scheduled maintenance and regulatory class inspection in a dry dock. This is slightly later than the Q4 CY22 start shown in our March note because of the time taken to purchase the Leandra. Assuming that the results from the POC tests are positive, MSC will then finalise agreements with third parties for trial and commercial fuel supply and conduct lengthier trials (4,000 hours of operation) to provide commercial operating experience, potentially culminating in obtaining LONOs from the engine manufacturer, Wärtsilä. Management expects that the LONO trial will take around six to eight months to complete. As the trials progress, Quadrise, MSC and other key stakeholders such as refineries will hold discussions, which are likely to commence in CY H223, regarding the supply of bioMSAR and/or MSAR for use by MSC’s global fleet. A single vessel would consume 0.6kbpd of fuel.“

So there was a MMU set up for the Morocco trial, that should still be available for the PoC volumes. Any clues as to whereabouts and size
jackg its in Denmark and produce 5 tonne/hr i think
So it would be nice to think that the PoC volumes have been or are being manufactured. Less than a month for both 1000t volumes. The Maersk PoC fuel came from Latvia via train if I remember correctly
I would still rather it be produced in partnership with a Refiner. If Qfi are going to produce it in Denmark, its not a big confidence booster to me.
Agreed, but it would get the trials underway which gives time for a MMU to be set up at a refinery, announcing a partnership with a refiner or shell would be welcome and a massive confidence booster.
Well if the recent developments on the chicken & egg scenario are to be believed, then hopefully we can produce it from a terminal and then move on to a refinery.
Otherwise its more greenwashing BS to speak at a conference.
Leandra has a second bunker barge alongside, Sea Solidarity, Hai Soon 16 was alongside this morning just after she berthed. Wouldn’t have thought she would take on too much fuel for dry docking, the journey to Dalia is 3100 Nm, 6-7 days at 150 tonnes a day, one barge holds vastly more than that.
Could be for different oil products such as lube oils, etc.
AIUI, Leandra would only use 150tpd going at high speeds, which she almost never does. You're looking at 70-100 for her typical speeds according to JM (depends on vessel load, speed, weather, etc).
Just a thought
Two tankers alongside . . .
What if the delays in Leandra docking, extended delivery service, was waiting for suitable fuel delivery to Dalian (or Singapore) in time for the finish of the dry dock?
POC could start post dry dock in China with the start of a far east/EU loop and replenish in Rotterdam (for example) or CEPSA in Gib or wherever.
It’s about time we had something positive happen in our timeline.
Come on Quadrise plc chuck us a bone!
