UK energy crisis: Former minister urges UK Government to invest in gas storage and stop relying on 'luck'
Former UK energy minister Charles Hendry has warned the government to stop relying on “luck” to keep gas flowing and urged it to invest in storage to ensure security of supply and to keep the lights on.

"A former Tory MP, Mr Hendry said the UK Government and energy watchdog Ofgem needed to stop pitting consumers against the industry, and £100 billion was needed to invest in the UK’s energy network to future-proof it from crises.
He said prices would continue to rise if there was no new strategy for the long-term supply of UK energy, hitting the poorest hardest, and admitted the market could not solve the current emergency."
Yesterday Radio 4 The Briefing Room's topic was the UK energy crisis assessed by a panel of experts. I think well worth a listen. Sir Dieter Helm identifies gas storage as the number 1 issue to be addressed by government and rejects Kwasi Karteng's view that gas storage is a red herring. He sets out in detail what is required to have a resilient energy system and bluntly says politicians need to stop faffing about and take decisions to make things happen.
Have a read of the replies here gents !

Yes, Nobby, I was alluding to reversing the SNIP. And yes, it could be done and given this recent issue with supply it could be the motivation to get something moving. But it's certainly not a quick fix as regards storage issues on the mainland.
AFAIA, the link between the ROI and NI runs South-North, one-way, similar to the SNIP. And both emanating from Moffat.
Besides the geology, IM is just in the wrong place, with the current infrastructure.
At the moment it's like having a nice array of solar panels on your roof and a load of large capacity batteries but not being conected to the grid. I can make and use as much electric as I wanted but then I couldn't sell any spare back to the power companies.
I hope they do get finally the ML and that by the time they have finished with "the shovel", all these other issues can be sorted. At the moment, the timing is right to allow for something to happen. If not now, it may never happen. imo.
FWIW, over the years I have suggested a few things, some tongue in cheek I admit, from extending to fall out pipe for the brine to further out to sea, to using repurposed tankers and selling it to someone like Britsh Salt in Chesire. Seems a shame they can't make use of something thats others spend to aquire.
Anyhoo, GLA. :)
Si if you are alluding to SNIP reverse flow that can be achieved with Mutual Energy given the right negotiating skills and of course the political driver. Also don’t forget that even without reverse flow there can be a netting off of forward flow during the winter when the store is called upon in NI and via the North- South link.
Yes there is a lot to do but the ML consent is the biggest obstacle to unlocking the development of what is clearly a critically important asset for security of supply and to enable the energy transition from methane to hydrogen
It might get a knee jerk reaction in the SP (be happy with one of those) until they realise that approval of a license is only the start of a long and expensive road to make IM of any use to anyone other that those in NI.
IMO, JW is just playing for time, as well as playing Sim Shipyard with BMT, until he can hopefully get a MOD contract or similar and then IM will be spoken of less and less, gradually fay dunaway into oblivion.
In hindsight, should have gone with the FSRU. Be quids in now.
If ML was approved next week surely this would rocket launch the SP given it would get far more publicity than we might have expected
If I was in the PR department, I would bombard every news, media outlet with the story of ministerial incompetence at the many years IM has been delayed despite being shovel ready. Its a risk of antagonising Poots but might get public attention and force his hand...positively, of course

Renewable energy is all very well, but how far will the wind carry us?
Chris Horn: Keeping the lights on as the grid stutters will become an all-consuming challenge

OSLO/LONDON, Sept 22 (Reuters) - "European gas storage levels are at their lowest in at least 10 years ahead of the crucial winter heating season, exacerbating the risk of further price spikes from already record-high levels."
"In European countries and Britain combined, storage sites are currently around 72% full, compared with 94% full at the same time last year".....
......"The low levels seen now - shortly before the end of the re-stocking phase in Europe's gas market - are a cause for concern, market observers say."......
......"Gas storage was emptied last winter due to strong demand, exacerbated by relatively weak renewables generation and strong underlying power demand, James Huckstepp, manager of EMEA gas analytics at S&P Global Platts, told Reuters."
"Power and gas demand has also been strong in Asia which pulls LNG away from Europe. This has combined with a global supply crunch and limited injections this summer, resulting in record-low stocks as we enter the heating season"
Minister for Small Business challenged directly on storage capability run down on Today Radio 4 programme (8:12) this morning. Seemed quite desperate trying to justify the current position.
Even Deborah Meaden’s concerned !
