I can see Mulan being a hit in China. It would have been a flop in US theatres
Mulan was a film made for the Chinese market. Now that relations between America and China have cooled. Disney got concerned about how to make some money off this movie. The story of Mulan is of great cultural importance to the Chinese and I fully expect them to hack Disney+ and make this free on the Internet in an attack against Disney and America.
“In countries where Disney+ isn't available, as well as in countries where theaters are open and operating safely, Mulan will still be given a theatrical rollout.“

I think they've done it M00la to avoid getting into the theatrical window issue / debate Universal have had with AMC.
Agree, I expect this trial to fail.
I think you're right on Sherlock Holmes 3, Laidback it is Dec 2021.
Regardless, seems the rival cinemas gave a good indication as to how Cineworld would react to this SINGLE, ONE-OFF movie from Disney.
I've just read/realised as well that it's not a co release between Cinemas and Disney+ like I initially thought. Those countries with Disney+ won't have it in the Cinema.
I personally think Disney are mad, I have Disney+ and with the amount they spent on Mulan they are 100% going to lose money.
People will pirate the film rather than pay the hefty price tag or they will just talk themselves into waiting until it's free on Disney+, after all they've waited this long.
You'll have some die hard Disney fans who will pay but knowing a few Disney fans myself and partially being one I can tell you it's all about the experience and the spectacle.
I just can't see this boding well for Mulan's takings and would say they may end up releasing in Cinemas retropectively if they are allowed.
Yeah, i just realised this myself after having slept on it. The news that Disney pulled Mulan had already been priced in. Most people didn't think they would release it in 2020 at all. I think this is a way they can guarantee it wont get pushed back any further.
Mulan was pulled off the schedules of heatrical releases weeks ago .... it is old news really.
Don't underestimate the anit-China factor in Disney's decision .... POTUS is ramping up the rhetoric.... no Chinese blockbuster can survive that

Wanda Group (Chinese Conglomerate) own 38% of AMC.
Therefore AMC will make all sorts of bad deals to hurt US/Western Cinema chains
Mulan would have made 1b plus like aladin and lion king. There were also treating mulan like endgame so disney sp will be screwed when box office comes in but cinemas might still have a chance
RS2002 isn't Sherlock Holmes 3 pegged for Dec 2021 ?
* releasing at
I bet Disney wished they never made Mulan !!
Tenet releadingcat same time will win the case for cinema over streaming.
This doesn’t surprise me that the Mulan news has only hit the stock of other cinemas groups by 1-2%.
1. We need to keep in mind that the #BoycottMulan movement has been trending since 2019 because of the cast and their pro-Beijing stance which was used to highlight the riots in Hong Kong and Pro-Democracy stance against Chinese communist rule. The Mulan cast including the two leads, Liu Yifei and Donnie Yen have been vocal in their support for China and condemned.
2. It’s no secret that coronavirus has tarnished the name and reputation of China and there is a lot of anti-Chinese sentiment in the West which has concerned Disney how their movie will be received when it opens.
3. The market budget for Mulan has been enormous. They cannot re-market the movie and thus desperately need to get it out, so not to repeat it all over again. Tenet from WB in comparison spent very little on marketing aside from a teaser trailer in December 2019, thus they were able to defer the movie for theatrical release.
4. The cinema groups are taking comfort from Disney’s statement that this is a ONE-OFF that they will respect the theatrical window going forward but on this occasion given their huge losses faced by the global pandemic, they have to dual release on PVOD. I believe many particularly those with UNLIMITED cards will take advantage of seeing the movie on the big screen to immerse themselves. It will also be cheaper than forking our £30 to watch it at home with distraction.
5. This will pit cinema vs PVOD and will allow Disney to report back which garnered more sales. I personally don’t see many paying that when they can Kodi or stream it from the internet for free, which will cement it for studios that PVOD in the era of post lockdowns doesn’t stack up to cinema.
6. There are 30+ big budget movies still lined up for the 2020 slate, so enough of a catalogue to play out which I suspect will spill into 2021, I even found out Sherlock Holmes 3 is pegged for December this year which was a surprise.
Cinemark futures seems to drop by 2.8%, AMC by about 2%. If we say that cineworld dropped by 2.4% then would see around 37.57p tomorrow so maybe not the disaster people are saying here, atleast so far.
However as we all know cineworld is volatile and seems to get traded down much harder than AMC and cinemark, despite having similar risks and being undervalued in comparison to these two.
Very little effect on AMC share price in US.
I think this is a bad move by Disney and they will make a lot less, and when they see how much Tenet makes in the cinemas, they will realise that you can only make big bucks on the bjg screen.
Disney have also said that this is a one-off while lockdowns are in place.
Mooky should stand his ground and stick to his principles.
