Also to reiterate myself, and point out garrym79's contribution to electric vehicle use, compounds my asertion that as poor economies develop they will progress as richer nations have to having more than one vehicle parked wherever. I believe a realistic case has already been made that due to lack of necessary infrastructure there will still be a need for petroleum based fuels.

About a quarter of my portfolio is in cash at the moment (not all 88E profits, BTW) so I'm playing with the "time in the market" vs "timing the market" risk right now. That said, the cash is not burning a hole and the future sectors I'm research as much to help inform my daughters' portoflios as my own. I will almost certainly diversify further but I'm more than happy to hold old economy stocks and assests (don't get much older than gold!) alongside new/future economy plays as I'm sure there will be plenty of overlap, however fast things change.

And in response, not 88e related but may be of interest to some of our LTH's who have derisked................. & have some spare cash burning a hole in their pockets, have a look at IOTA (MIOTA).
Around 30p when I bought a few back in September last year & now rising daily through £1.00 > £1.80 last night.
IOTA is right there in the core of IOT (Internet of Things) & with a massive 2 days to come on the 21st & 28th April, now might just be the time to Get In.
Of course, carry out your own DD & DYOR, but this could be a Mini Bitcoin in the making.

But the whole theme of the presentation is that the world changes and often (much) more quickly than we might think. The world now is a much different place from the start of the last century when the car replaced the horse. Fast forward and I can see a future where, in an IoT-enabled world the autonomous cars can "see" (or at least know the whereabouts of) one another, as surely as aeroplanes know where one another (and landing strips) are even in reduced visibility. Obviously needs a critical mass to be achieved before that is any sort of possibility.

I'm still very much in 88E, albeit on a free ride having taken profits. My main take-away from the presentation is, when it happens it could happen much more quickly than I (and I suspect others) had appreciated - if Tony Seba is right. In terms of oil pricing, my view is that lower demand doesn't necessarily mean lower prices; in fact, the reverse could be true. In trying to match supply with demand, the number of companies remaining/exiting (or diversifying away from) oil production will become key. My understanding is that other and investments (such as diamonds and crypto) could have more supply unlocked but, by tightly controlling supply, there's the opportunity to aspire to and/or maintain higher price levels. It wouldn't surprise me if that scenario plays out in oil too.
Lower demand will, as you've noted, ultimately play out in fewer jobs so, on a personal level, I hope your obvious skill are easily transferrable to a different sector if/when the time comes. If the regard in which you are held on this board is anything to go by, there would be no shortage in people wishing to use your talents.

Thanks for taking the time to watch the Tony Seba presentation and I'm pleased that you regard it as time well spent. Thanks too for your observations, especially about the final mile and the difference in quality of road networks around the globe. Two very important considerations but ones that hadn't immediately struck me at first (or second!) viewing; but exactly why I find it useful to get others' perspectives, thanks again. I guess it would be informative to understand the historical position of how long after the America/New York example given, that other countries adopted cars to the same extent. Also, it seems a shame that such a revolution, when it comes, might only further widen the gap between various nations around the globe - but, regrettably, perhaps that is the natural order of things.

You've hit the nail on the head regarding varying conditions and their suitability for fully autonomous driving garrym79. Around 2015 all the car companies were promising to have autonomous vehicles operating on UK roads as of now, but all we have in reality is a few 'driver aids' that are of questionable value. Presumably this is because what is technically possible and the real world situation, such as a single track rural road with few passing places, in fog, with the cars cameras and sensors slathered in mud, don't match up.
The fact that one of the biggest achievements of the technology seems to be that it can keep you in a given lane sums it up for me... great for the USA where picking a lane and sitting in it for miles is permitted, but in the UK that is lane hogging, something we could do with less and not adding to with those trying to show how clever their new car is.
Off-topic warning for anyone other than those contributing to this thread yesterday and the other thread relating to EVs.

Standard UK distribution is 3 phase, and transformed down from HV to LV locally at your sub-station. Most sub transformers are set to supply 410 to 420v which allows end user at least a 400v supply as normal. Between any two of the three phases gives 400v, but this then creates an imbalance on the third, say unused phase. Most common 3 phase motors operate on three phases without the need for a neutral conductor. Neutral conductors are required when devices need 220v as a return path, so lamps etc on a control panel for example. The earthing conductor does not necessarily need a cable. It can be the sheath, or other suitable arrangement that is intrinsically protected. There are numerous earthing arrangements available..
It's 3 phase or 3 phase and neutral requiring 4 cores plus a suitable earthing arrangement. A very small amount of items such as welders can operate on 2 phases, however not popular due to the imbalance created.

3 phase has 5 wires 3 live wires...1 neutral & an earth/ground
the 3 phases are in principle each at 230 / 240 but as they are out of phase with each other
they do not add up to 690 but 380/400
