Survivorship Bias

Definition of 'Survivorship Bias'

In empirical studies of share price performance the results may be distorted by focusing only on companies which survived through to the end of the period of study. Particularly poor performers (i.e. liquidated firms) are removed from the sample, thus biasing the results in a positive direction.
