Successful Kaliakra Appraisal Well inĀ Bulgaria
Melrose Resources plcĀ (LSE: MRS) ("Melrose" or "the Company"), the oil and gas exploration, development and production company,Ā today providesĀ anĀ update on itsĀ appraisal drilling andĀ development activities inĀ Bulgaria.
Drilling
The Kaliakra No.2 well has been successfully drilled to appraise the KaliakraĀ gasĀ discoveryĀ which isĀ located approximately 15 kilometres east of theĀ Melrose operatedĀ GalataĀ fieldĀ production platform. The well was drilled approximatelyĀ 1.8 kilometresĀ to the west of theĀ originalĀ Kaliakra No.1 discovery well using theĀ Prometeu jack-upĀ drillingĀ rig.
Kaliakra No.2 penetrated the top of the Paleocene reservoir interval at a depth ofĀ 2,679Ā feet and encounteredĀ 67Ā feet of net gas pay, which isĀ substantiallyĀ thicker than the net pay ofĀ 31Ā feet found in the Kaliakra No.1 well.Ā The open hole logs andĀ down holeĀ gas samples obtained from the wellĀ haveĀ confirmed that the reservoir hasĀ very goodĀ properties, with an average porosityĀ in excessĀ of 30Ā percentĀ Ā high gas productivity. Given theĀ quality of theĀ reservoir,Ā it was not necessary to runĀ flow tests in the wellĀ and it has been temporarily suspended for future use as a development well.Ā
Ā
DevelopmentsĀ
The incomingĀ Bulgarian GovernmentĀ has now appointedĀ aĀ new Council of Ministers, including the Minister for Economy, Energy and Transport and the Minister for Environment and Waters.Ā It is therefore anticipated thatĀ the GovernmentĀ willĀ shortlyĀ beĀ able toĀ grantĀ MelroseĀ approval to completeĀ the KavarnaĀ fieldĀ developmentĀ as a subsea tie-back to the Galata platform.Ā AĀ submissionĀ is also being prepared to solicitĀ GovernmentĀ consents for the KaliakraĀ field developmentĀ which will be tailored to facilitate the future tie-in of the Kavarna East reserves.Ā
Ā
Commenting on the update,Ā David Thomas, Chief Executive said:
"We are very pleased with the results from the Kaliakra appraisal well which confirm our geologic model for the area and effectively increasesĀ theĀ most likely combined reserves estimate for Kavarna, KavarnaĀ Ā EastĀ and Kaliakra toĀ 100Ā Bcf. ThisĀ isĀ approximately one and a half times the size of theĀ Galata field reservesĀ produced betweenĀ 2004Ā andĀ 2009.Ā
"Beyond theseĀ threeĀ structures weĀ stillĀ haveĀ twoĀ otherĀ exploration prospects to drill on the same geologic trend and we plan to acquireĀ furtherĀ 3D seismic data in early 2010Ā to the north of the trend whereĀ we believe the same Palaeocene exploration play may be present."
