Successful Kaliakra Appraisal Well inΒ Bulgaria
Melrose Resources plcΒ (LSE: MRS) ("Melrose" or "the Company"), the oil and gas exploration, development and production company,Β today providesΒ anΒ update on itsΒ appraisal drilling andΒ development activities inΒ Bulgaria.
Drilling
The Kaliakra No.2 well has been successfully drilled to appraise the KaliakraΒ gasΒ discoveryΒ which isΒ located approximately 15 kilometres east of theΒ Melrose operatedΒ GalataΒ fieldΒ production platform. The well was drilled approximatelyΒ 1.8 kilometresΒ to the west of theΒ originalΒ Kaliakra No.1 discovery well using theΒ Prometeu jack-upΒ drillingΒ rig.
Kaliakra No.2 penetrated the top of the Paleocene reservoir interval at a depth ofΒ 2,679Β feet and encounteredΒ 67Β feet of net gas pay, which isΒ substantiallyΒ thicker than the net pay ofΒ 31Β feet found in the Kaliakra No.1 well.Β The open hole logs andΒ down holeΒ gas samples obtained from the wellΒ haveΒ confirmed that the reservoir hasΒ very goodΒ properties, with an average porosityΒ in excessΒ of 30Β percentΒ Β high gas productivity. Given theΒ quality of theΒ reservoir,Β it was not necessary to runΒ flow tests in the wellΒ and it has been temporarily suspended for future use as a development well.Β
Β
DevelopmentsΒ
The incomingΒ Bulgarian GovernmentΒ has now appointedΒ aΒ new Council of Ministers, including the Minister for Economy, Energy and Transport and the Minister for Environment and Waters.Β It is therefore anticipated thatΒ the GovernmentΒ willΒ shortlyΒ beΒ able toΒ grantΒ MelroseΒ approval to completeΒ the KavarnaΒ fieldΒ developmentΒ as a subsea tie-back to the Galata platform.Β AΒ submissionΒ is also being prepared to solicitΒ GovernmentΒ consents for the KaliakraΒ field developmentΒ which will be tailored to facilitate the future tie-in of the Kavarna East reserves.Β
Β
Commenting on the update,Β David Thomas, Chief Executive said:
"We are very pleased with the results from the Kaliakra appraisal well which confirm our geologic model for the area and effectively increasesΒ theΒ most likely combined reserves estimate for Kavarna, KavarnaΒ Β EastΒ and Kaliakra toΒ 100Β Bcf. ThisΒ isΒ approximately one and a half times the size of theΒ Galata field reservesΒ produced betweenΒ 2004Β andΒ 2009.Β
"Beyond theseΒ threeΒ structures weΒ stillΒ haveΒ twoΒ otherΒ exploration prospects to drill on the same geologic trend and we plan to acquireΒ furtherΒ 3D seismic data in early 2010Β to the north of the trend whereΒ we believe the same Palaeocene exploration play may be present."
