North Lanut Drilling Results

AVOCET DRILLING INDICATES POTENTIAL FOR SIGNIFICANT RESOURCE INCREASE AT

NORTH LANUT MINE IN INDONESIA

Avocet Mining PLC ("Avocet" or "the Company") announces encouraging drill hole intersections from resource definition drilling at the Riska open pit at the Company's 80% owned North Lanut gold mine in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.  The drilling to date represents 15,109 metres of a planned 21,200 metre programme. This has consisted of 173 reverse circulation (RC) and 9 diamond drill holes and is part of an ongoing effort to expand the reserves and mine life of the project and explore areas peripheral to and immediately below the currently designed open pit. Highlights include:

The first phase of the drilling programme confirms significantly more mineralisation than previously modelled;

Excellent drilling results on the periphery of the deposit, including oxide and transition ore, indicate potential for increased reserves and resources and an extended life of mine;

Avocet targets an upgrade of the open pit resource by September 2008, following the completion of the remaining 6,100 metres of the current drilling programme.

Table 1 summarises the significant intercepts received to date from this resource definition drilling programme

While several holes have intersected mineralisation both within and outside the current open pit design, the table lists all in pit intersections separately to show the effect of drilling on resource confirmation separately from resource expansion. Except where stated, a 20 g/t Au upper grade cut-off has been applied for reporting purposes and in order to be consistent with methodology used for the resource model. Drill hole locations are laid out in the figure that can be found in the version of this announcement on the Company's website.

Drill hole intercepts within the current open pit design confirm and upgrade the current modelThese include: 83m @ 3.92 g/t Au (RSP352), 76m @ 3.65 g/t Au (RSP351) and 80.5m @ 2.81 g/t Au (NLD333).

The Company is particularly encouraged by the results of drilling on the periphery of the deposit, which represent lateral extensions to oxide and transition mineralisation currently being mined. Significant intercepts on the western flanks suggest potential for highwall layback that would grow reserves and extend mine life, while intercepts on the northernsouthern and south-eastern edges represent potential resource expansions that require minimal additional stripping. The majority of these intersections are from surface or shallow depth. From the RC drilling, the better intercepts on the western margin include: 81m @ 2.99 g/t Au (RSP 425)72m @ 2.27 g/t Au (RSP 465)55m @ 2.73 g/t Au (RSP 344), and 125m @ 1.19 g/t Au (RSP 341). The better intersections on the northern and south-eastern edges include 53m @ 2.94 g/t Au (RSP 397), 41m @ 3.36 g/t Au (RSP 355) and 23m @ 2.53 g/t Au (RSP 356). The better intersections on the southern margin include: 57m @ 2.56 g/t Au (RSP 472) and 64m @ 1.82 g/t Au (RSP 473).

The diamond drilling portion of the programme is evaluating the resource and reserve potential of high-grade sulphide mineralisation below the current designed open pit and providing samples for preliminary metallurgical test work to determine an appropriate gold extraction process and the economic viability of such a process. Initial results from this programme include: 87.50m @ 6.97 g/t Au (NLD 333) and 100m @ 5.74 g/t Au (NLD 334) from the base of the current pit design. The intercepts in NLD 333 and NLD 334 include high-grade zones of 42m @ 15.0 g/t Au (uncut) and 36m @ 18.5 g/t Au (uncut), respectivelyThey are also part of longer intersections through the current resource (NLD 333: 168m @ 4.98 g/t Au and NLD334: 162m @ 4.05 g/t Au).

The Company anticipates remodelling the open pit portion of the Riska resource in the next six months once the current resource definition drilling programme is complete. Avocet is currently planning a deep drilling programme to assess the resource and reserve potential of the deep sulphide resources up to 250 metres below the current designed open pit. This is a new project targeted to add considerably to the mine life of the North Lanut operation.

Commenting on the Riska drilling campaign, Jonathan Henry, Chief Executive Officer, said:

"The drilling results at the producing North Lanut mine indicate that our original resource model is conservative, with numerous high grade intercepts. Like Penjom, North Lanut confirms our strategy of developing larger deposits through ongoing exploration work in and around the current mining areas. The Company's intention is to replicate this strategy on a number of our exploration targets in Indonesia."
