LTI, and here's some for you. Right back at ya...https://www.vice.com/en_uk/article/bn3njm/britain-mashed-back-to-the-dark-ages-we-go
Utrickytrees, I admire your confidence that it's over. But look into the eyes of your Brexit bretheren Farage, Rees-Mogg, Banks et al and you'll see they fear it is not over. Even Putin looks worried about it....They know it could all slip though their fingers and the UK will stay in the EU in some form or another (probably still paying into the EU coffers but without a say on the laws we have to abide by which would displease Brexiteers and Remainers alike). Give up control should have been the mantra.
AE Marsh, you can say "end of" all you like but this is far from over. Democracy enables people to discuss and even, God forbid, change their minds. That's why we have a general election every 5 years - because people change their minds. People know they were duped on Brexit - on both the leave and remain sides. And if both campaigns were built on lies - or innacurate information, to be more generous - give me one good reason why Brexit and the future of the UK isn't important enough to get a second opinion from the "voice of the people", just to make sure Brexit is really what they want. Not so unreasonable, is it?
Sell price just jumped - I was underwater here and am now on dry land, for now. Marvellous!
Wids and AE Marsh, I would put money on at least 52 per cent voting IN next time. There will be a referendum on the terms of any deal or no deal once our sovereign parliament has rejected whatever TM comes back with at the end of March 2019. Democracy in action!!!
The Far End, I am now wide awake and refreshed. Think my maths was spot on. Everyone has a place in a democracy, even the 28 per cent who didn't vote in the first Brexit referendum. They may well turn out for the coming second referendum.
Right, it's past midnight and I am off to my bed. Goodnight, all.
Fleccy, I think you are right about the one-way street, with Brexit as the destination. Let's say Britain's a car, heading down that street and 37 per cent of the driver's brain decided they should take that route to Brexit. But as the car travels along the road, and it gets more and more bumpy, the rest of the driver's brain - 63 percent - begins to ask questions about the route they are taking and ultimately the destination. The 63 per cent say this route isn't safe. We could crash. Maybe we should dab the brakes at least. Maybe even stop. But the driver says no, 37 percent decided this is the route and that's that. No more questions from anyone. It's foot to the floor to destination Brexit, no matter what. It's set in stone and will happen. Is that sensible, Fleccy?
Fleccy, if and when the Government gets the slightest whiff that an anti-Brexit head of steam is building throughout the populus - among both Brexiteers and the 12 million who didn't/couldn't be bothered to vote - they will drop Brexit like a hot potato. They will be forced to call a second referendum on the deal, or lack of deal they get. There may then be a few pensioners, fishermen and cab drivers, plus Farage foaming at the mouth, who will take to the streets in protest but the vast majority who voted for it will breathe a silent sigh of relief as the UK steps back from the abyss.
Thanks DCB. I'll pipe up occasionally on Brexit as I still am intrigued how people who voted for it now bang on about "democracy" and "the will of the people" etc but from now on they want everyone to shut up about it because they voted for it and that's that. Well, that's not quite how democracy works, as they are slowly finding out. All the best, Wilf.
DCB, all the disaster capitalists like Farage, Banks, Redwood and Rees-Mogg must weep a little into their glass of port when any silver lining appears on this particular cloud. They'll be fretting that they and their mates won't be able to scoop up stocks at bargain basement prices on the back of Great Britain PLC crashing and burning with the help of the 37 per cent....
TheFarEnd. Yep, you're right. Vote carried. But on 37 per cent, not 52 per cent. Would that be acceptable for any boardroom vote on the future direction of a company?
AE Marsh, actually 37 per cent of the VOTING POPULATION voted "OUT"!
Bash, people seem to be loading up with ITV shares on the HL site.
Fleccy, I know the EU is far from perfect. But we also know that before the referendum, the UK was the fastest growing economy in the G7. It is now the slowest. We now know the NHS will not get that promised £350 million a week. We know the pound tanked to almost parity with the Euro. Inflation is rising. Prices are higher in the shops. We can't recruit enough people to work in the NHS. Talented people from Europe are leaving to go back. Companies will leave the UK - they have already frozen investment. Fabled trade deals with other parts of the world are pipe dreams - the US is already putting up tariffs on UK produce. Jobs have been lost already in the UK. All because of the Brexit result. And that's before we have actually left! So I do fear what the next 5 years will bring. Sure, there will be crises in Europe - but I would rather be on a team of 28 fighting those problems than on a team of one. Which is exactly what we will be. Give me one reason to be optimistic. Just one solid reason.
Fleccy, no need to be sexist and gender-phobic. You are right in that no-one can see the future. But optimism won't pay the bills for people if they lose their job because of Brexit. And there will be losses. Which will be as a direct consequence of your vote. I am sure those people will appreciate your optimism for their future when it goes down the toilet. And all for your big idea of being free from the EU? You should try living in some parts of the world where people are oppressed and know nothing else.
Born, Murdoch will probably get Boris as PM too. Millions did exactly what the Australian billionaire media mogul told them to do - vote for Brexit. And the same people will vote for Boris if Uncle Rupert tells them to do it. They are sheep, lemmings, turkeys voting for Christmas or, if you like, an iceberg holing the side of one if the finest ships in the world.....
DCB, people like Fleccy, LTI, John46, Newchurch and the rest of the Brexiteers are like the iceberg that sunk the Titanic. Only this iceberg whinges about the fact the ship is sinking and then takes control of re-arranging the deckchairs as the whole thing goes under. Sadly, the only ones in the lifeboats will be the elites, including Farage, Johnson, Gove and Rees-Mogg, who'll all be saluting the iceberg as they sail by and are picked up by Rupert Murdoch on his superyacht.
Could be shouting in the wind here but I have just invested in this company. Anyone on here with me?
Welcome Squillion! I'll second that. Hope you're right and look forward to us all keeping in touch on here - and hopefully getting richer - over the months and years to come. All the best.
