Excitement about the region has been further fuelled by London-based explorer Greatland Gold GGPL.L which this month reported "world class" copper-gold drill results from its Havieron licence in the province.
It hosts two of Australia's biggest copper and gold mines, Telfer operated by Newcrest Mining (NCM) , and Metals X Ltd's (MLX) Nifty.
However, sandy soil and the remote desert location have made exploration both difficult and expensive.
Renewed interest has come as miners have increased exploration spending following a commodity price recovery and as technological advances have opened the region's potential.
"The thing that stopped people has been the sand dunes. As we are running out of places to look for mineralisation that is sticking out of the ground, the obvious place to start to look is underground," said Lynda Burnett, managing director at Sipa , which is active in the region.
"People are drilling better. There are other more experimental techniques, people are sampling the sand dunes and picking up trace elements of mineralisation, they are sampling plants," said Burnett, who as a geologist first worked in the region in the 1980s.

I have not traded any ( my mistake in the run up to 15th Jan disappointment )

"I think the previous focus on looking for shallow ore is not going to be the optimal strategy now we have seen these bonanza grades at Haveiron, and dont forget as well as the 200g/ton stuff they have up to 8% copper, 12% lead and 6% zinc and probably cobalt in there too given the local geology.

With the ore being worth up to $20,000 per cubic metre the depth is irrelevant, the capex of a 700m shaft is going to be some $10-20 million and the opex per ton is going to be trivial compared to the value of the ore , over at nifty they are digging ore worth not much more than $100-200 per cubic metre out the ground in a 1000 metre deep underground mine, Telfer is also more than 1000m underground on soso grades and in South africa they mine more than 3000 metres underground chasing veins less than 50cm thick with less than 10g per ton ,

I suspect that rio have hit something similar to greatland and even on one intercept you know with those grades you will be mining for sure just a question of how big a mine you need, hence the airstrip going in already, once rio have finished the land grab they will want to reveal their hand, I am sure there is going to be major development in the region"
