As a tier 1 asset banks can hold gold as 100% of its value. If the gold prices rises substantially the banks can improve currently failing balance sheets by netting off debts/losses to gold as a revalued asset.
This is the first time since 1978 that gold has been officially a money tier 1 asset for banks.
Expect gold price to move a lot higher along with silver, inflation, interest rates and velocity of money. Only bonds will price lower.
This goes in to effect end of this month.

GGP is 40 kilometers east of the Telfer gold mine, just around the corner from a geological perspective. This mine, which is now on its final gasp, had a deposit of 27 million ounce of gold and is operated by Newcrest Mining. Once the similarities in the geological setting of these two projects were recognized, an indication that Havieron might be Telfer’s sister, Newcrest proposed to Greatland to become the operator of the project, and to bear all its exploration costs. In exchange, Newcrest can earn in to a 75% interest in the project. As a result, Greatland can now concentrate on a number of other promising targets.

Newcrest, which will maintain a majority interest in the joint venture, will be the manager of the mining programme during the farm-in period with the option to earn up to a 70 percent stake by spending up to $65 million over a six-year period after an initial investment of $5 million, it said.
Newcrest intends to process any ore from the Havieron site at their nearby Telfer mine, the company said.
"Greatland Gold's exploration to date has intersected significant mineralisation (nearby) Telfer’s extensive infrastructure and processing capacity," Newcrest Chief Development Officer Michael Nossal said in the statement.
The agreement comes at a time of wider consolidation in the gold industry as miners around the globe aim to bolster shrinking reserves to boost growth and take advantage of rising prices.
