If the company was sold to (say) an American company can you be sure the business would not be relocated to the USA? See what has happened in recent years to a number of, for example, smaller UK defence companies.

Yes, but only if ken over by another British company.

A great shame if yet another British defence company gets snaffled by private equity, broken up and its technology sold on to another American company.

I am looking forward to Thursday. No great news expected, simply confirmation that all is well in all divisions with growth prospects. In particular I hope we get some more information on SMR as things have gone rather quiet of late.

I didn’t read the Article as “negative guff” at all. I saw it as a positive. Why? Because it demonstrates a potential opportunity to open up, the otherwise “closed”, EU attitudes towards what the UK can offer with its highly skilled defence and aerospace industries.

Interesting article in today’s DTel re RR new Turbofan and German interest in partnering with its development.

Personally I would love RR to develop the engine on its own. However, negotiations could perhaps include obtaining free access to proposed EU defence spending for British firms. I am sure German Government would be happy to lean on the EU as its engineering industry is in dire straits.

Why on earth would we want sell out to an American company or any other for that matter. We are trying to build a sovereign company and not one that if taken over will simply be broken up and disappear taking jobs and skills away from this country.

I, for one, would not sell out to a predator, regardless of the price. We have already allowed too much of our defence technologies to be acquired by foreign interests.

I do hope that Chemring does not suffer the same fate as for example, Ultra Electronics, Meggitt, Cobham and Inmarsat in recent years. In these uncertain times it is vital the UK retains control over its defence technology/capabilities. Quite why we allow American vulture funds to acquire such companies beggars belief.

I am not sure the French or American governments would have created a level playing field so that foreign companies could pitch for the business. Are any of their nuclear plants built by anyone other than their own national contractors?

I, for one, cannot understand why, given RR’s reputation, experience and expertise in the field, the competition could not have structured in for example the following way: declare the Country’s initial needs to be 10 SMRs. Award 6 to RR and hold an open tender competition for the remaining 4. Any views?

Let’s hope HMGovernment has already identified those sites for SMRs which will avoid years of waiting for planning and other permissions!
