Banks use depositors money with which the depositor receives very little in interest. NIM is a gain.

the standing charge is supposed to be incorporated within the price cap, which would mean that some companies standing charge would be higher than others but the unit of use lower, and vice versa.
You may still be able to get a tariff without any standing charges.

OFGEM do not set standing charge levels, but the standing charge will be taken into account as part of the overall price cap set by ofgem.
