A 'hit' only comes about if the business is liquidated/goes into administration.

The 'hit' would fall on shareholders if after paying debt obligations, there was nothing left. Bond holders would also take a hit if there was insufficient assets to recover their money.

You would need to look at who the shareholders and bond holders are.

I imagine that most of the debt is by way of corporate bonds.

Unfortunately would be just a cosmetic exercise of absolutely no benefit- unlike making investments at way under NAV and increasing a shareholders percentage ownership each day shares are cancelled.

Of course though, the share count could be reduced a lot quicker if the yearly maximum percentage of 10% was increased and easily afforded.

example - A 2023 £4 Billion investment would most likely have reduced the share count by over 10%

Yes, any sensible long term investor would be happy with shares being bought for cancellation at way below NAV.

Current NAV about £49 Billion versus market cap of about £27.5 Billion.

If the maximum number of shares were bought that permission was granted for (based on the current 10% of shares in issue yearly proposal) then another 10 years of buybacks after the current one would see (excluding new shares for staff schemes) the shares in issue down to about 22 Billion.

At the current valuations lloyds should be putting enough into share repurchases each year to be able to purchase the maximum number of shares that shareholders have given permission for.

Example- at the agm permission was granted to repurchase up to 6,701,169,260 shares.

Obviously £2 Billion wasn't enough to repurchase this number of shares in a 12 month period. £3 Billion would be more like it

I do not accept 'should' - Lloyds is a business, and the aim of any business should be to maximise profits. It is market forces that should determine the level of interest paid to depositors of cash not any politician .

There are plenty of alternatives for customers getting virtually zero on accounts. They should do the leg work if they want to increase their cash returns. If a bank was concerned by the level of cash leaving their customers accounts , then they would act appropriately.

I think you could do away with 4.1 Billion and most likely 4.2 now.

Only £485 million left to spend, with a big uplift in price unlikely anytime soon - awaiting half year results in a months time, at which time money in the pot will be considerable less.

Lloyds are already returning 12% in total at the current price - cannot see why a politician would differentiate between how returns are made

it would only be a 12% dividend yield at the current price as the market thinks that LBG is only worth a little over £27 Billion. It would be a 6% yield at 84p..

Forward 2023 dividend yield should be about 6.5% at the current price

Vodafone dividend yield is about 11%

Lloyds if they so wished could have a dividend yield of 12% + , based on the current share price, but the current policy is one of progressive dividends with the flexibility of further returns by way of share buybacks for cancellation.
