with maintained profitability and without buybacks the dividend could still be progressed for a long time though but not endlessly

without buybacks ,to have an endless progression of the dividend would mean an endless progression in profitability, Buybacks for cancellation can enable progression of the dividend without the need of increasing profitability. I believe the BOD were aiming to get rid of excess capital by the end of next year?

just goes to show how lucky investors are to be able to pick many UK stocks at

'half price' . The profitability of Lloyds is better than when the share price was at 89p ( and that was with nearly 7 Billion more shares in issue as well)
