Goldman Sachs bankers are set to scoop pay and perks of more than £240,000 each after a bumper year.

The US bank set aside almost £9.8billion in 'compensation and benefits' in 2020 for its 40,500 staff around the world – the biggest pay pot for a decade.

The average is £240,000, but some lowly bankers will get far less while high-flyers trouser millions. That is up slightly from last year's £236,000.

In England, the November data shows on average, house prices have risen by 1.2% since October 2020. The annual price rise of 7.6% takes the average property value to £266,742.

The regional data for England indicates that:

London experienced the greatest monthly price rise, up by 4%
the East of England saw the lowest monthly price growth, with a fall of -0.3%
London and Yorkshire and the Humber experienced the greatest annual price rise, up by 9.7%

The price of consumer goods rose at an annual rate of 0.6 per cent in December, up from 0.3 per cent the previous month, the Office for National Statistics said on Wednesday.
The figures reflect a turbulent month in the UK, with the ordinarily crucial Christmas sales period for retailers, bars and restaurants disrupted by the latest lockdown measures. The rate of inflation was slightly higher than the 0.5 per cent consensus expected by economists.

After falling gradually for two years, UK inflation has reached unusual lows as the coronavirus pandemic brought lockdown restrictions to the economy. British Airways and Iberia owner International Airlines Group has agreed to buy Spain’s Air Europa for 500 million euros ($606.7 million), after the pandemic cut the price in half and IAG struck a deal to defer payment for six years.

Expats living in the European Union who move money between UK banks and local accounts are being hit with hefty charges because of Brexit.

Now that EU banking payment rules no longer apply, there is no limit on charges for receiving money from UK accounts, or sending it to them. The Spanish giant Sabadell, and the Italian bank Unicredit were among the first to take advantage of this.
