Britain and EU closing in on agreement for financial services

It has emerged that Lloyds Banking Group has pushed back plans to return in spring until the summer.

The lender, which employs 65,000 people in the UK, is drawing up trials to see how the bank will work in the future.

A survey conducted last year by a union found that two fifths of Lloyds staff do not want to return to the workplace.

Accountancy firm KPMG has sent a survey to staff to ask how they want to work in the future and whether they would prefer to work closer to home rather than commute to a City office.

British Airways is exploring the sale of its headquarters as part of a plan to allow its head office staff to split their time permanently between home and office working after the pandemic.

The airline has hired property consultants to evaluate a sale of the sprawling Waterside complex on the outskirts of Heathrow airport in west London, which houses 2,000 staff, according to an internal email seen by the Financial Times.

“Many of us are based at Waterside and it’s not clear if such a large office will play a part in our future,” BA’s director of people, Stuart Kennedy, wrote in the message to staff. He added it is still “very early days” and a sale was just one option on the table.

Last month we announced our new Group strategy, which sets out a clear roadmap that will enable us to:

Support businesses to recover, adapt and grow
Help rebuild households’ financial health and wellbeing
Expand availability of affordable and quality homes
Accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy
Our ambition includes supporting the building of sustainable, affordable and high quality housing while transitioning to a low carbon economy. In doing so, we’ll also support improved financial health and wellbeing for households across the UK, help businesses in the construction industry to recover and adapt post the pandemic.

As the UK recovers from the health and economic effects of Covid-19, we’re working towards ensuring that everyone can access stable, affordable and safe homes in places they want to live. With this in mind, as well as new homes, we are also committed to broadening access to home ownership and exploring opportunities to increase our support to the UK private rental and social housing sectors.
