Big UK banks’ profits have slid by more than half over the last year, according to a ranking of the world’s largest lenders published today.

UK lenders included in The Banker’s top 1,000 World Banks 2021 experienced a 53 per cent drop in profits.

Losses were attributed to the severe damage the pandemic has inflicted on the UK economy and Brexit uncertainty.

Lloyds Banking Group absorbed the harshest hit to pre-tax profits of the top five UK banks, down 71.72 per cent.

The Bank of England on Thursday kept its monetary policy unchanged, but vowed to monitor rising inflation as the U.K. economy emerges from its Covid-induced slump.

The proportion of British employees on furlough in early June fell to its lowest since the start of the pandemic at 6% of staff or about 1.5 million people, as easing COVID restrictions allowed most businesses to reopen.

Thursday's figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) represent a drop from the 7% of staff on furlough in late May and are far below the peak of nearly 9 million recorded at the in May 2020, during the depths of Britain's first lockdown.
