....suggests the BBC Newsnight political editor in the last half hour:

....this may well explain the rise in all UK bank shares and the pound on the fx market in the last half hour of trading.....
If it states that the percentage is unchanged after the 1.5 million drop, then there is a typo there - either the number of shares or the percentage is incorrect.
If the shares held by Directors have dropped by 1.5 million, personally I would not be concerned, as if it is a current Director reducing, they would have needed to release an RNS. More likely that it is something like a retiring Director's holding dropping out of the calculation, which doesn't need to be reported to the market, I believe.
Matlot - your 20:49 post - I hope you are right about activity tomorrow....however, I suspect tomorrow and Friday may be a bit of a damp squib, with low volume and low volitility, due to the US holiday tomorrow.........hope I am wrong and you are right :)
Most UK banks currently down 4-6%, sp personally I am not too concerned about todays drop (7% currently), considering we have been going up faster than most other UK banks in the past few days. Some profit taking is inevitable given the run that UK banks have enjoyed recently, you might even say that it is a healthy sign. Will watch with interest how all banks perform for the rest of the week.
gregpeck - you can get a breakdown of the figures in the download link on this page:
https://www.fca.org.uk/markets/short-selling/notification-and-disclosure-net-short-positions
...it confirms that there was no change yesterday in the figures.
forfaiter - I don't think that we can say that there has been no short covering today, as we will not hear about it until Monday or Tuesday. Personally, I don't think that they will have reduced significantly today, but I hope I am proved wrong. There has been good volume today (approx 3 times daily average), so some covering is possible, but unlikely in my view.
