There is much confusion about what is meant by the R value.
Fleccy quotes a value of 0.6 to 0.9 for R. What is really meant is that this is the current R (n) value.
ToDoom quotes the value of 3 for R. This is the R(0) characteristic of the disease in an unexposed population. I haven't checked the maths but I think that his figure of about 76% for herd immunity is about right.

Prophyaxis is to guard against. To treat is manage the course of a condition with the aim of mitigating the symptoms hopefully leading to a cure.
So we would vaccinate against Flu but we would not treat someone suffering from flu by injecting them with a flu vaccine.
"100% efficacy against severe or critical disease and hospitalisation" is a treatment, being peddled. ROFL :)"
100% efficacy against severe or critical disease and hospitalisation is prophylaxis.
Prophylaxis is not the same as treatment! cf pregnancy and contraceptive devices.

BBC web site:
We have an update on a story from the Italian newspaper La Stampa, which had reported that some 29 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine found at a plant near Rome may have been destined for the UK.
A UK government official has since said it was not expecting such a delivery; and the Italian government has said only that “the batches that were inspected were all aimed for Belgium”.
La Stampa reported that the European Commission asked Italian officials to inspect the doses at the Catalent plant in Anagni at the weekend.
The plant has a contract with AstraZeneca to "fill and finish" its vaccines and is set to do the same for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, also approved for use in the EU.
The discovery comes weeks after the Italian government blocked the export of 250,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Australia, as part of EU regulations allowing a shipment to be stopped if a company is seen to be failing to meet its obligations to the 27 member states.

AstraZeneca PLC on Tuesday said it has extended an existing agreement with the US government to supply up to 500,000 additional doses of AZD7442, a long-acting antibody combination in late-stage development, for the prevention and treatment of Covid-19.
The Anglo-Swedish drugmaker said the new US government deal builds on an agreement from October 2020 that was for a total of 200,000 doses with the US Department of Health & Human Service and Department of Defense. This takes AstraZeneca's total planned US supplies to 700,000 doses.
AstraZeneca said the value of the extended agreement is USD205 million and is contingent on AZD7442 receiving Emergency Use Authorisation from the US Food & Drug Administration.
The total value of current agreements with the US government for the development and supply of AZD7442 in 2021 is about USD726 million, AstraZeneca said. The company does not expect the extended agreement to affect its financial guidance for 2021.
"The long-acting antibody combination has the potential to offer almost immediate protection to those who are not able to be vaccinated, to both prevent infection or treat the disease in patients already infected with the virus. The US government's support is critical in helping accelerate the development of AZD7442, which we believe will be an important tool in the fight against Covid-19," said Chief Executive Pascal Soriot.
This follows the announcement that the rollout of AstraZeneca's vaccine has been been suspended in several European countries over blood clot fears. However, the World Health Organization, AstraZeneca, and the European Medicines Agency have insisted the shot is safe, and that there is no link between the vaccine and reported blood clots.
In addition, AstraZeneca said on Tuesday has completed the divestment of its 27% stake in biotechnology company Viela Bio Inc to Horizon Therapeutics PLC as part of Horizon's proposed acquisition of Viela.
AstraZeneca received USD775 million in cash proceeds and profit from the sale, although it said these proceeds also won't affect financial guidance for 2021.
Shares in AstraZeneca were up 3.0% at 7,189.00 pence in London on Tuesday.

So in a village with a population of say 10 , if 1 person catches Covid then the rate per 100,000 is 10,000.
Blatant misuse of stats. To get the figure of 850/100,000 you have multiplied up from a small denominator.
Context is gine by this report in the Devon midweek herald:
Infection rates in East Devon rose from a low of 33.5 per 100,000 – the lowest since the end of September – on Saturday, to 45.8 per 100,000 on Sunday, when cases with a specimen date of March 2 were added to the dataset.
But the rise is entirely down to what appears to be an outbreak in a care home in the Sidbury, Offwell and Beer area, with the MSOA area reporting 34 cases in the seven day period between February 24 and March 2 – with 29 of them coming from specimen from March 2.
"A spokesman for Public Health Devon said: “There is currently a rise in new cases in the Sidbury, Offwell and Beer area of East Devon, and the majority of them are linked to a single setting. We and Public Health England are working closely with that setting to ensure that all reasonable measures are in place and appropriate action is taken to ensure everyone’s ongoing safety, and to prevent spread of infections. Controls are in place and there is no current evidence of wider community spread.”
However, despite the slight spike in cases in East Devon, the district’s infection rate is still in the bottom third in England, sitting 207thof the 315 local authority area."
These figures do not seem to correlate with those posted by Devon County Council:
https://www.devon.gov.uk/coronavirus-advice-in-devon/coronavirus-data/
Total Deaths to date is 82.6/100,000. NOTE THAT THAT IS 82 POINT 6 PER 100,000
TROLL!
Yes I think that it is an interesting read, not least because it highlights the mismatch between "Societal" attitudes to "Big Pharma" and health development. Indeed this is summed up by the very phrase "Big Pharma".
