I've just checked and you're right - only tugs are using the port right now. This is a surprise to me as I check it most days and there's recently been a fair amount of dredging in the port by the ANTAREJA
There's new satellite imagery of Karanja Terminal available on Google Earth Pro, as part of the "Historical Imagery" feature.
There are two photos, one from October and one from November which both show significant ramping up of operations compared to the current Google Maps photo from February. There doesn't appear to be much new construction of jetty, but what jetty there is is certainly a lot... dirtier. A significant area of port appears to be used for coal. There's also a sort of floating dock on the western side, seemingly servicing a separate, western portion of the port.
The differences between the Oct and Nov photos show a significant change in the containters on the western side, suggesting significant active use.
Whilst it's clear this is happening at the location Karanja Creek, is it clear that this is the responsibility of MPL? The Times of India article describes and shows pictures of mangrove destruction at Karanja Jetty.
Note, that Karanja Terminal (owned by MPL) and Karanja Jetty (owned by ?) are not the same thing. It appears that the Times of India may have gotten confused, as I did back before I did my DD. If you look on Google Earth, there has been some recent and rapid development of Karanja Jetty, separate from the MPL owned Karanja Terminal.
This is a sad example of environmental destruction. I do hope the responsible party are appropriately handled by the authorities.

The location in Google Maps (Karanja Jetty is about 1.5km west of MPL's Karanja Terminal) https://goo.gl/maps/ZumMtdD84xa9Eops9
At the time of writing, it's still visible on marinetraffic.com near Karanja Port. If you click on the boat and click 'Past Track', you can see it's been making a sort of sickle shape back and forth between the open water of the creek and Karanja Port itself.
The URL appears to be working for me. Just tried it.
That said, the image is unimportant. It's a screenshot of marinetraffic.com showing the dredger Antareja up close to Karanja Port at (UK time) 1412 on the 18th of September.
There appears to be dredging going on in Karanja.

It appears there's been a similar explosion of death statistics. This has got to be scary for those living there. It's considerably higher than their first wave.
There has been a covid case explosion in India, which may mean poor news for us. www.thehindu.com/coronavirus/?
New lockdown in Delhi. No explosion yet in and around Mumbai but I'm not betting against it within the next few weeks.
Was this in regards to the elections on Saturday?
Honestly, I do wonder if the directors are deliberately silent, allowing them to buy up stock whilst it's cheap whilst genuinely releasing information as required. This is of course in the form of a very dry document. I've read them all and I'm happily invested but maaaaan, those are some hours I'll never get back.
Apologies, I was wrong! I skimmed the article and thought it referred to the Water Taxi being arranged between Mumbai and Karanja. Reading it better, perhaps not! Perhaps this is good news.
For more info about what I thought this was referring to, see https://www.tripoto.com/maharashtra/trips/good-news-for-mumbaikars-water-taxis-worth-rs-7510-cr-will-be-available-to-cure-mumbai-traffic-603a196410dec
Hi Tils, I did see news about this. However, I believe that this is *not* servicing the Karanja port owned by MPL. There is a fishing jetty that's just a mile down the coast in Karanja and I believe that's what it'll be servicing. It makes much more sense to - it's much more suited to casual loading/unloading of domestic boats and is much nearer the actual town rather than the MPL port, which is a bit out of the way.
Still good news about upcoming stuff in the area though.
It's certainly traffic! I'm seeing a bit more on marinetraffic.com these days too.
I wouldn't say they're ROROs though. Looking at the port itself, I'm not seeing any infrastructure for RORO operations. The ships also look more like your traditional cargo ship where cargo is loaded from above by crane.
Cheers all. It's good to see that someone has actually seen it in use.
Has anyone been keeping an eye on the boat activity at Karanja Port? I've taken a look at it on marinetraffic.com most mornings (when it should be afternoon in Navi Mumbai) and I've not actually seen any cargo vessels using the port. The port also doesn't appear to be registered on most marine traffic websites, which is a bit of a concern.
I know that they're looking to ramp up operations later on this year but in October's interim results document they said that there was a Tata/Daewoo JV multi-year contract which I'd have expected to see some use with. The fact that I've seen nothing but fishing vessels around the port is a bit of a surprise to me.
I'm still investing but this is definitely making me a little concerned. Does anyone know how often a port would expect use with such a contract?
This screenshot imgur.com/a/FVuIR73 was taken just before 6pm local time, but it shows exactly what I've seen most of the time I check.
Thanks! It looks like they're just filing responses to queries they're getting about the local area.
We might not be getting much view of the future with this document, but I find I'm very rapidly getting an appreciation for the bureaucracy of Maharashtra. That's an area of knowledge I definitely didn't think would grow under this lockdown.
Ah, thanks for that information dump! I'm reading between the lines then that they're looking to expand Karanja Port further into Karanja Creek (this was confirmed already) and that this is a paperwork exercise related to that. Furthermore, their paperwork is lined up for it, but they haven't actually started the job.
That makes sense what with the first port not making a profit yet and covid wrecking lastyear's plans. Still, it's nice to know that they have ideas for further business growth.
I certainly expect there will be an update. They have updated from time to time for the past decade, but i'm just trying to piece together what's going on after that last update. Working out what work isn't started is proving harder than I thought!
Seeing as I apparently can't post links, to find it, google "Karanja terminal", specify hits within the previous week. It's hosted on the domain of forestsclearance .nic .in
I found this document certifying that "Works have not been started...for the purpose of proposed expansion of multipurpose terminal at Karanja creek".
I don't suppose anyone could share any context on this?
I found it by typing "Karanja Terminal" into google and specifying hits only within the previous week.
