CHATTOGRAM, Apr 15: The generation of 1200 MW capacity Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project has drastically fell to 162 MW only due to shortage of coal, according to Coal Power Generation Company Limited (CPGCL) sources said.
Two units of the project can generate over 1200 MW power daily. But during the last few days, the generation has drastically been declined to 157 MW to 162 MW since the first week of April, CPGCL sources said.
"The situation will improve this week,' said Nazmul Huq, Managing Director of CPGCL.
He said, "a ship carrying 65,000 metric tons of coal will arrive at Matarbari this week.'
"So the generation of the plants will certain to increase," he said.
The plant needs a total of 35 lakh metric tonbs of coal annually. As a result, it needs nearly 3 lakh tons of coal monthly.
Meanwhile, a ship carrying 63,000 metric tons of coal arrived last month. But those coal was mud-mixed. So, Coal Power Generation Company Limited (CPGCL) rejected the shipment after detecting a significant presence of soil in the consignment meant for the Matarbari Power Plant in Cox's Bazar.
The Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Plant at Matarbari, built on 1,600 acres along the Bay of Bengal, has a capacity of 1,200MW. The first unit began commercial production in December 2022, followed by the second unit in August 2023.
According to CPGCL sources, the coal, supplied by an India-based company that won the tender to source the material from Indonesia, was found to be heavily mixed with soil, rendering it unusable for power generation.
coal was transported aboard the Singapore-flagged MV Orient Orchid, which entered the Matarbari Channel on 17 March. The ship was operated by Meghna Group of Companies.
The Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) has implemented two units Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project. CPGCBL, a state-owned enterprise of Bangladesh, developed the project at a cost of Taka 51,854.88 crore.
The generation capacity of each unit is 600 MW totalling 1200 MW by two units.
The 1,200MW power project, costing Tk 51,854 crore, was constructed in Matarbari and Dhalghata Unions of Cox's Bazar District.
The power plant had been built adjacent to the sea, which will not be affected by cyclone or tide, as a-14 meter above sea level embankment was constructed and the power plant is located inside the dam keeping in mind the highest tide in Bangladesh at a height of 10 meters.
It was reported in March 2014 that "Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh (CPGCB) will get $4.53 billion loan according to the agreement with Japanese donor agency Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the construction of coal-fired plant at Matarbari.
