ProfSPD, it's nice to agree - that Kiss and Tell will make for a riveting read one day.
As you've spent so much time in hospital I'm very surprised tah you don't consider Covid-19 a deadly pathogen. 2% fatility rate is a general population figure. Sounds dandy, but introduce Covid to an ICU ward, a hospice or care home and you and I both now that figure is much, much higher. For those groups it is a serious risk and often deadly, right?
I never suggested testing 'on the doorstep'. Knocking on the door first, yes, it's just polite. I would expect a professional to come inside, masked, gloves and PPE donned and spend the 1-2 mins required to take a nasal swab in the comfort of a room in my house, a porch, or at best a hallway, probably not too much to ask, and a lot more convenient that having it done at the wheel of your car in a drive-in as many have endured. I don't really see any issue with this if sensitively and respectfully done.
I personally don't care what test they use, I quote PCR because that's the one I have knowledge of and it's the one you mentioned in your OP. If there's better more relaible tests, all the better.
I would summise that measures introduced from lockdowns to mask wearing, social distancing, enhanced personal hygiene and reduced travel have all contributed in decreasing the prevalence of influenza this Winer. I can't comment on other respiratory illnesses, but I can confirm that my asthma has improved marginally, which is great, and probably due to being able to avoid usual triggers in lockdown. Every cloud as a silver lining I guess.
