Tanzanian President John Magufuli on Thursday sacked the Minister for Home Affairs Kangi Lugola, saying the ministry was leading in undertaking fraudulent projects.
Magufuli also sacked the Commissioner General of the Tanzania Fire and Rescue Force Thobias Andengenye, for overseeing a dubious project worth some 408 million Euros (about $452 million).
He announced the sacking of the two senior public officials shortly after he had inaugurated a housing project for prisons officers in the commercial capital Dar es Salaam which was televised live by the national broadcaster, Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation.
The president said the Deputy Minister for Home Affairs Hamad Masauni and the ministry's Permanent Secretary Jacob Kingu had written to him resignation letters which he had accepted.
He said Andengenye was involved in the preparations and the signing of the project for the Tanzania Fire and Rescue Force, operating under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
He added the project was authorised by officials in the Ministry of Home Affairs without the knowledge of the Ministry of Finance and Planning, and without the approval of the National Assembly.
He said other officials in the Attorney General's Office and the Tanzania Fire and Rescue Force who were involved in the shoddy deal should be accountable. President Magufuli appointed Lugola Minister for Home Affairs replacing Mwigulu Nchemba in a cabinet reshuffle in July 2018.
There is hope in Tanzania that negotiations between the government and stakeholders in the gas industry will resume this year and result in the development of a gas plant.
Already, there are reports that the government plans to scrap restrictions in the Production Sharing agreements signed earlier in 2019.
The Attorney General has already begun talks with various stakeholders and prospective investors to review grey areas so that the government is not prejudiced in any way.
In this regard, stakeholders are expecting the government of President Magufuli to sit down with them for a Host Government Agreement so that the proposed gas plan is developed soon.
Authorities said negotiations will resume speedily this year on the land where the proposed gas plant is to be developed.
The proposed gas plant will greatly reduce dependence on petroleum and offer an alternative source of energy.
Tanzania is on the verge of being connected with more gas supplies regions. This plan to boost electricity generation was announced by the country’s Deputy Minister for Energy, Subaira Mgalu. The regions involved include Arusha, Dodoma, Tanga, Kilimanjaro and Morogoro.
According to Mgalu, the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) has already embarked on a grand infrastructural project to connect natural gas for domestic and industrial use in the Dar es Salaam, Coast, Lindi and Mtwara regions.
“The plan is to reduce dependence of electricity as the only source of power for production by the industries,” he says.
Tanzania is in the process of implementing a mega hydropower at Stiegler’s Gorge along the Rufiji River in the Selous Game Reserve that will produce 2,100 megawatts
The country, with a population of approximately 55 million, has just 1,500MW of installed grid capacity.
Earlier, the Tanzanian President John Magufuli, promised to turn the country into a middle income industrial economy by 2025.
