BOTSWANA TO PRODUCE SURPLUS POWER
SOONER THAN 2030
The Ministry of Minerals and Energy will certainly achieve the target to produce surplus power before the 2030 deadline. The Permanent Secretary Pelaelo Khowe revealed this during the question and answer session at the Stakeholder consultation meeting the Ministry held in Letlhakane recently.
The stakeholder engagement was meant to give stakeholders, including the Area Member of Parliament, Boteti District leadership and the Media insight into the energy development projects undertaken countrywide under the Integrated Resource Plan for Electricity (IRP) 2020 - 2030. The various power generation projects being undertaken through the Independent Power Producer (IPP) arrangement, will collectively yield a whooping 1000 MW of power; far above the country’s peak period power supply demand of 700 MW.
Given the rate at which the power plants are springing up across the country, Ministry officials are confident that the country will be generating power in excess of 700 MW by 2027, three years earlier than the targeted date.
The electricity projects undertaken in Letlhakane include the anticipated 100 MW solar PV and 100 MW Wind power plants as well as the 400/220 kV substation that is already in operation.
The Minister of Minerals and Energy, Honourable Lefoko Moagi reminded Ministry officials of the necessity of keeping to timeliness if the IRP targets are to be achieved. “Time of the essence. We want things done now, ” he said, further advising his officers to start talking to power operators in the Southern African sub region to enthuse them into uptaking power from Botswana.
