Unless physics has changed mobile devices cannot communicate directly with satellites, there antennas are simply not powerful enough.
But what about:
GPS - Satellites broadcast their current time. The phone receives these signals and triangulate position ... it never sends anything back.
Starlink (SpaceX Internet) - Requires a dish with line of site to satellite
Happy to be proven wrong (fan of new technology) however I feel like this may be marketing hype, and perhaps the reality is the phone with either need to be outside, or need peripherals i.e. big antenna case.
