Anyone wishing to report similar examples of accidental misrepresentation like this and I'll start a list of things so that we can be systematic and try and get things like this fixed.

Peterfal - indeed some train systems have the platforms higher than the rest of the track so that the train effectively stores its energy whilst it is in the station (these are fairly new installations I believe).

Indeed if you have a regenerative braking system then in principle the kinetic energy can be turned back into other forms of energy for storage. It seems that regenerative braking has been used in the UK train fleet for some years - https://www.rssb.co.uk/research-development-and-innovation/research-reports-catalogue/pb009681 - but interesting they point out that these systems try and deliver the electrical energy back to the train grid, and that this requires a nearby load (a train) to work effectively [i.e. you cannot simply have a train at one end of the country taking the energy from a braking train at the other - the losses are simply too great]. So in this eventuality apparently a resistor is used to dump the energy as heat - a battery on the train would of course be a more efficient solution.

Madasahat - if you do a Bed and Breakfast just before it hits 50p then you will avoid any CGT tax. Then next financial year as you are starting at the new buy level you may have c. 20K of shares with a CG of again only perhaps 11.5K - then you can do a full 20K Bed and ISA and use next years CGT because you will be able to use your CG allowance a second time around.

Peterfal I think you misread it. Cargo is one thing as it can of course be kept separate from passengers but I would guess that there are maybe different safety requirements for passenger transportation systems. The problem for VRFB's is simply one of specific energy density. It takes electrical energy to accelerate each Kg of mass up to speed - energy which might of course be recovered if you have a regenerative braking system but if you can avoid moving mass around that is generally a good idea.

The vacuum tube is of course a reference to Musk's nonsense hyperloop idea which will of course never get any further than Richard Bransom.

SOTRR - some very good points there. Even being able to just allow the train to run 5km on batteries would allow it to go past sections that are very expensive to electrify.

The problem then comes down to one of which battery technology to use and there it pains me to say but I think the lower weight and essentially solid nature of a Lithium-ion battery would usually win the day, regardless of having to swap them in and out when they degrade.

Having said that from a safety point of view on pure underground services I'd rather not be near a lithium-ion battery as compared a VRFB one. However pure underground installations are going to be no doubt electrified from the start.

Of course Vanadium might come in useful in Lithium Vanadium Phosphate batteries

Peterfal - I fear that they relatively low specific energy density (the amount of energy stored per Kg of Battery) for VRFB's plus the fact they contain large amounts of a strongly acidic liquid will rule out VRFBs for all transportation systems. Of these electric trains are the most efficient in terms of the transportation you get per MWh of energy, and there VRFB's only just looks marginally energy effective. I agree that if you have the land with a train track on it then it should not be beyond the wit of man to put a copper wire above the track so that efficient and green electrical trains can use that system. Then you don't need to carry anything around with you, the electrons are already there sitting 1m above the train, pushed along with minimal loss of energy by all the other electrons in the wire.

Alternatively you could build a big long metal tube on the same track, then pump all the air out and then try putting people inside that and try firing them along at 500 miles per hour (no no no please do not do that !)

for Boxcar let us substitute a 40foot shipping container. This we are told can typically store 1MWh of energy.

All we now need is someone who knows about trains .... or a little bit of research - specifically page 119 of David Mackay's "Sustainable Energy without the hot air" where it describes the fact that an 8 carriage electric train consumes 1.6KWh per 100 passenger-km. I estimate that each carriage could seat 60 passengers, so 8 carriages could take around about 500 passengers in all.

Thus a fully loaded train might consume 8 kWh per km - thus 1MWh would take you 125 km.

Such a battery usually has the capacity to deliver something like 250kW - i.e. could run for 4 hours. Thus if you want to spend 4 hours travelling 125km then you are in luck. The rest of us might like to move somewhat faster than that so if you wanted a pure VRFB solution you might need to treble or quadruple the number of power stacks they they typically have. Not out of the question.

If they do then they need to enforce the Musk solution - namely Ecclestone cannot tweet his rage out on a sunday morning and has to instead breather deeply into a paper bag and hand his output to someone else for checking first. It's a real pity that they haven't behaved professionally in this situation - it reflects badly on all of us in the mining and AIM space to some extent.
