AHP, surely this is a loophole in the law? It seems to allow any unscrupulous board of directors to simply let the process occur and then disappear with the assets. This can't be right. Or does the state attempt to seize the assets, which would presumably require the appointment of an official liquidator?

My understanding of a strike off procedure is that the company must have no assets and no liabilities. It also needs to be approved by a certain percentage of shareholders. Does this accord with your view?

I tell you what, why don't we all chuck fifty quid into the pot and make a bid ourselves? That way BHP would be free to jump in.

I've always said value will eventually be delivered, but not yet. Ganfeng, M&G and the company have all, by virtue of their actions, demonstrated what they believe the current value to be and whatever a private investor may feel, the facts speak for themselves.
Personally, I thought the M&G investment was of great significance and hugely important.
As for their original investment cost, I recall back in 2014 this was a live debate. From memory, it was not published at the time of listing , but I'd guess they got in very cheaply. Their longer term approach has and will be, far more successful than that of Blackrock, Capital and Cadence.

Indeed, but Rio don't own any shares here, so they are not in the game. And the share register is too tightly held.
Mind you, I suppose they could go for Cornerstones holding...which would put the cat amongst the pigeons. But somehow, I just don't see it. This is a two horse race.

Rio were left flat-footed on this one and have been outmanoeuvered by BHP. But, given the entrenched position of both BHP and Newcrest, it's quite difficult to see how they could gate-crash the party. I'm not sure BHP would sell for any price, nor can I see them entering into a jv...it's not their style.
I think we know who the combatants will be, and my money's on BHP as the winner.

LB, not sure I agree. If someone is interested in buying the assets, they won't be paying any attention at all to pr froth. The only impact has been to cause misunderstanding and no company wants that hanging over them in negotiations.
It has been a massive own goal. Silence would have been preferable...or at least a more controlled flow of information.
Regardless of these errors, if a deal is going to be done, it will be.

I think the company have made some pretty basic errors with regard to PR.
1. They should have waited until they had signed engagement letters with the banks before making any comment.
2. The RNS stating they had still not signed-up with the banks was merely a re-iteration of the error and I guess it was forced on them (it could have been avoided if they hadn't made the first mistake)
3. Mir/and the company should never have mentioned the interview until such time as all the ducks were in a row. And Mir should not have compounded the error by posting his various tweets.
4. That last interview should never have been given the go ahead. It was misleading.
These mistakes have created a great deal of uncertainty and could so easily have been avoided. They have also put the company in a position where it can be shot at by people like share prophets, which is greatly to the disadvantage of private investors.
This is an interesting and exciting situation, but I think the company has badly mishandled the flow of public information and people have been making poor decisions on the back of it.

It would be excellent news if they did, as I'm sure it would speed matters up and would add a considerable level of expertise. And I love the idea that it may spur Newcrest into action.

On the 24th October the company stated the banks had already started work. Today the company said the banks were continuing the process.
So, what's changed? The answer is nothing.
