Towards a New Global Gas Map: Africa, the Mediterranean, and Russia in Transition
The Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline (NMGP) is a landmark project aiming to connect Nigeria’s vast gas reserves to Europe via Morocco, crossing 16 West African countries. With a planned length of over 5,600 km and a capacity of 30 billion cubic meters per year, the NMGP will enhance regional energy security, link new discoveries in Morocco, Mauritania, and Senegal, and provide Europe with a credible alternative to Russian gas. Initial tenders for construction are expected in 2025, with a final investment decision anticipated early that year.
Meanwhile, the Leviathan gas field off Israel’s coast, together with significant reserves in Cyprus and Egypt, is set to supply Europe through the EastMed pipeline, diversifying European gas sources and fostering regional cooperation under frameworks like the Abraham Accords.
This Mediterranean corridor complements the African west coast pipeline, both offering strategic alternatives to Russian supplies.
Russia remains a major gas supplier to Europe via pipelines such as Nord Stream, Yamal-Europe, and TurkStream, fed by Siberian fields. However, geopolitical tensions following the Ukraine conflict and Western sanctions have accelerated Europe’s push for supply diversification.
Together, these three corridors - NMGP, EastMed, and Russian pipelines - form a strategic triangle shaping Europe’s future gas supply.
Africa and the Mediterranean are increasingly attractive due to new discoveries, relative political stability, and growing international investment from the US, UAE, and EU.
For Europe, diversification is now a strategic imperative.
For Africa and the Mediterranean, this moment offers a historic opportunity to emerge as key players in the global energy transition.
