US Energy Organisation Slams Oil Giant BP For Cutting Ties

Thu, 27th Feb 2020 11:52

(Alliance News) - A US energy association has hit out at oil major BP PLC after the company cut ties with three such industry bodies on Wednesday.

The three associations BP is leaving are the American Fuel & Petrochemical Manufacturers, the Western States Petroleum Association, and the Western Energy Alliance.

BP is quitting the AFPM and WSPA due to disagreements on carbon pricing, while it is leaving the Western Energy Alliance due to differences over methane regulation and the sale of assets in US states in which the organisation is active.

Western Energy Alliance hit back at BP, saying it was never contacted by BP at any stage during BP's review.

"Western Energy Alliance found itself highlighted in BP's report on trade association participation, despite not ever having been contacted about its development," said Western Energy Alliance.

"Nor did BP bother to engage in Western Energy Alliance's discussions regarding methane rules, which were open to all members. If BP had worked with us in advance of the report, it would have realized its assessment on reducing methane emissions is likely at least partially aligned."

Western Energy Alliance said leaving the association due to selling assets in the Rocky Mountains is valid, but added: "I suspect BP needed a few trades to put at the top of its pyramid in the glossy report."

The organisation said it is "proud" to stand up for the oil and gas industry, accusing governments of "political favouritism" towards the wind and solar industries.

BP shares were 2.0% lower on Thursday shortly before midday in London at 419.75 pence each.
