Mon, 09th Feb 2015 06:36

LONDON (Alliance News) - The roll-out of superfast broadband, meaning a connection with speeds of more than 24 megabits per second, is on track to cover 95% of the UK by 2017, with four out of five UK properties current having access, according to figures published by the UK government.

Around 80% of the UK already has access to superfast broadband, according to the figures.

"Today there are two million more UK homes and businesses with access to superfast broadband than there were two years ago as a result of this ambitious project. This is a tremendous result that is already making a huge difference to millions of people," said Culture Secretary Sajid Javid.

The government is currently undertaking a GBP1.7 billion investment in rolling out superfast broadband with BT Group PLC.

Chief Executive of BT's Openreach division Joe Garner said that it has committed up to GBP1 billion of its shareholders money to the projects, and if it comes in under budget, pledged that savings can be reinvested to take coverage further. Funds will be released it take-up exceeds expectations, Garner said.
