(Alliance News) - Miner Glencore PLC on Thursday said the UK Serious Fraud Office has opened an investigation into "suspicions of bribery in the conduct of business" of the group.

Glencore said it will co-operate with the investigation.

The SFO in a short statement said: "Following the announcement by Glencore PLC, the SFO confirms it is investigating suspicions of bribery in the conduct of business by the Glencore group of companies, its officials, employees, agents and associated persons."

In May 2018, Bloomberg reported that the SFO was preparing a formal investigation into Glencore over its dealings in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Shares in the FTSE 100 constituent were down 6.7% at 222.45 pence in London on Thursday. In Johannesburg, the stock was up 0.9% at ZAR45.55.
