(Alliance News) - Oncimmune Holdings PLC said on Friday its recent research suggests that Covid-19 infection leads to a persistent activation of antibodies against multiple different organ systems and tissues in the body.
The Nottingham-based immunodiagnostics developer carried out the study in collaboration with the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles.
The study focused on the sex-specific autoimmune reactivity to Covid-19 following a mild symptomatic infection as well as the prolonged effects of Covid-19 beyond the initial infection and recovery phase.
The research team used Oncimmune's autoantibody profiling panel to understand which parts of the immune system are still activated for up to six months following apparent recovery from the infection.
The results showed that a wide array of autoantibodies remain elevated, including those linked to autoimmune conditions such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. The research found men were more affected than women.
Oncimmune said the study is the first to report both the presence of elevated autoantibodies after mild or asymptomatic infection and their persistence over time.
Shares in Oncimmune were down 1.2% at 172.00 pence on Friday morning in London.
